p; Sinistra.

This was always the hardest part. It didn’t matter that she knew that it would all be okay once she was in there; it was really quite difficult to make the jump. Her lilac eyes stared back at her in the reflection of the water, and as it ripped from the slight breeze which was blowing it reflected her internal uneasiness. Her legs shook with the anticipation of jumping in, and her heart beat in her chest cavity, begging her to just finally do it. However it was her brain that was causing the problems. Noooo it’s too cold, do not dive in. She giggled at her own silliness, and realized either she would have to make the jump soon, or someone would see you staring at herself intently in the water, as if she were looking for gold.

She took a deep breath as she thrust her legs off the land, and finally made contact with the water. She managed to swallow some accidentally, and began to romp around, making more noise that one wolf should be able to make. The sun was directly overhead, and the summer day had been especially hot, and so she was enjoying her swim in the Lake. It had been a while since she had felt the wonderfulness of swimming in her favorite territory of the Valley. She remembered that her and Takashi had come across each other, and they had gotten off on the wrong foot, and even at one point, Wip thought that it would stay that way, and that she had made her enemy in the Valley. However, by the end of the encounter they were swimming just as she was now. Yes, she was glad she had made the jump now, and she promised herself that next time she wouldn’t be afraid. Just as she had the last time.

White Rose Lake was a sight to behold on such a hot and humid day. There was a gentle, cool northerly breeze permeating the Salvaje Valley, but it was not enough to counter the hot sunlight beating down onto his pitch black coat. Sinistra didn’t amount to much on roasting days like this: he might patrol the lands at a snail’s pace, or lounge about the edge of Sparkling Springs or one of the mountain&srquo;s other water source, but there was little energy to spare when the heat sucked the life out of him like a vacuum attacking a pile of dirt. Today, however, he was taking a little trip to the lake in the land’s center to enjoy the cool water.

It was a solitary journey: many were these days. Calli was off reacquainting herself with the lands and its inhabitants and doing whatever else it was she did… he likewise, and as they had spent nearly three months in each other’s company exclusively, it was good for both of them to have a bit of space for a change. That was the purpose of his sojourn to the water’s edge: space. A taste of freedom that the sparkling liquid brought — though he suspected, rightly, that he would not be the only creature taking advantage of it on a day like this.

But it was mildly surprising to find the Lake mostly deserted spare for a single, vaguely familiar wolf taking a swim. Coming to pause on the water’s edge, Sin gaze out over the rippled yet reflective surface of White Rose to watch the other, trying to remember who he knew her and who she was.

It felt so nice feeling this again. She enjoyed being suspended in the water, and swimming around, squealing when a fish fluttered across her legs, its rough scales brushing against her fur. She enjoyed the cool water, and she only now realized how much she had missed it. The last time she had been swimming had been oh so long ago, and Wip promised herself not to deny her this pleasure once more. Of course there was always that nagging feeling that she had in the back of her mind at the moment. She didn’t know why, but the water had felt different, maybe even smelled different. Who knew? Wip had ignored it, attributing to whatever the Summer did to the Valley, and had jumped in, all cares thrown to the wind.

However, the more water she accidentally swallowed, the more she felt it, it no longer tasted like water, but like something different, and soon, her tongue was filled with the taste and she could not get rid of it. Her head became a bit dizzy, and she shook it, assuming she was merely tired of all the swimming. She smacked her lips, and swam to the edge, however, her illness was forgotten immediately as her purple eyes locked onto the figure watching her. She shook the water off of her coat almost automatically as she stared at him, unblinkingly, and then, swallowing the lump which had formed in her throat she approached Sinistra, not allowing her eyes to blink, wondering if she was imagining things. Back so soon?

Sinistra, being far enough from the edge of the water and not paying particular attention to it anyway, did not notice the same issues as Wip — fully immersed in it — did, but the returned Nova leader had little reason to examine it: he had no reason to suspect there was anything wrong with the flow from Morning Glory Cascades. Time, of course, would change that.

As the stranger swam closer to the shore, that nagging feeling of unresolved familiarity increased. During this time, his mind was going through a checklist of names of creatures he had known in the Salvajes before departing — but nothing was matching to the face. That was until she finally reached the banks and exited the Lake, turned and looked directly at him: then he recognized her, and wondered why he hadn&rsqo;t done so sooner. Wip. Their last meeting, if he so remembered, had been not but a day or two before he and Calliope had left. And it had been… neutral, Sinistra guessed. He hadn’t been happy then, and he wasn’t one to mask his displeasure.

The now-Creek-resident was first to speak; he couldn’t figure out what to make of her words, whether she was joking or blatantly serious. So Sin looked her up and down suspiciously before shrugging noncommittally, but for a moment said nothing. How’s life?

Sorry for the hold up, computer problems. :/

This all seemed rather unreal. It wasn't the fact that she was speaking to Sinistra, while that was weird, Wip wasn't too suprised he had returned, that wasn't unheard of, especially now since Sphinx and Tiamat had returned. Wip wondered which other wolves would be returning to the Salvaje Valley, so many had left it and she hoped that those which had would return. Except for Danflower of course, he had caused too much trouble, and even though she had never really sat down and talked to him, she happened to be friends with the two wolves he had had the greatest conflict with.

It felt weird because she somehow felt detatched from her body. She couldn't really feel herself speaking, and she didn't feel that usual sense of dread she felt when she was speaking to Sinistra. Wip began to develop the awareness that their was a certain buzzing going on at the back of her head. She wondered if it had been there for her whole life, and she had just noticed it. Or if she had noticed it before, and had forgotten, or if she had never forgotten at all. She blinked, having confused herself. She registered his question, and tried to peice together some thoughts. Peaceful I suppose.

Peaceful. She supposed. Oookay, well, that pretty much did it for that conversation, nice chatting with you! Carry on! Really, what could they talk about: Wip moved to Silver Creek, apparently man-chasing; whatever, none of his business. He hadn’t even been here, been Alpha at the time, so if she owed anyone an explanation it was Tobin — and Sinistra actually didn’t know if she had or hadn’t explained, nor did he know if he cared. At the moment, the only care was trying to pass by the pressing desire to nod, shrug, turn around and move along. Clearly the former Novan had no interest in this.

Same. Thanks for asking. Of course, the question had not been returned, the answer had been short and disinterested — a “one word answer” even though she had, for good measured, tacked on two extra utterances. For whatever they were worth. But if that was the manner of the hour, who was he to argue? Staring rather blankly at Wip, or possibly through her, he didn’t say a single other thing either. How awkward, and yet almost amusing…

That's a cool new avatar.

It had been unmistakable the expression which she had read on his face when she had emerged from the water. It was a look which she hadn't gotten to see on Sinistra's features too often, or ever really, he had looked confused slightly, but not because he had not known his surroundings, but because for a fleeting moment her name had been lost to him. Wip was almost embarassed at this fact. So much so that she had almost given into a scoff, but not directed towards him. She would have laughed at herself because she had spent so much time these past few months in his absence remembering him, letting him plague her thoughts and sometimes actions, and here, the bastard had even forgotten her name.

She half smiled, knowing that Sinistra was only as powerful over her as she let him be, and for some reason the dark male had always had a hold over her. She had been a bit younger when she had come from her old pack, and her fathers voice had still circled through her head, and so it had taken her longer to act like a regular pack wolf than a mere servant to her faith. She sighed, realizing that the fault of how she had felt about Sinistra had really only ever been hers. Wip wondered what it was that was allowing her brain to act in overdrive like this.

Calliope is well I hope? I had heard that the two of you had left together, where did you go, what did you see? She stopped her speech knowing she was asking a lot of questions, however she had always wondered what was on the other side of the Valley.

Perhaps the message had gotten through. Maybe she just realized that the conversation had otherwise hit an impasse if she said nothing herself. Really, Wip could have shrugged and returned to her swim and he couldn’t have cared less: Sinistra didn’t dislike her, but she had chosen to become a Creek wolf now, which meant that her business was not his, for good or for bad. It also meant that his business was not hers, but in the interest of not being a total asshole for first complaining that she was acting disinterested and then complaining she was acting too interested, the Alpha went along.

She’s well. We saw a lot, more than he could remember, actually, and it was preferential to keep the majority of their travel private. That gave them something in common that no one else had or knew: a very difficult thing when one was constantly in a pack, constantly surrounded by fifteen or more fellow residents who knew far much too much about who they thought you were. We didn’t go too far, just a few mountain ranges over. It’s pretty much the same as it is here. Less populated, though — we didn’t come across many wolves. And no packs. Not really odd, he thought. Most wolves in the region headed for the Salvajes, knowing there were so many of their kind here.

And your mate is whom?

She listened to him speak and nodded her head as he told her about what he had seen in his recent vacation from the Valley. Wip had wondered what they would find, and what the motives for his departure had been. She remembered the packmeeting before he left, and how he had so clearly displayed his annoyance at the members of Nova Mountain. She couldn't really blame him really, Wip supposed she had been annoyed be the fact that he had been peeved back then because she had had a certain predisposed opinion of him. But asking the packmembers to report something at the meeting wasn't much to ask for she realised.

She wondered what they would have to talk about next. The two hadn't really laid down a foundation for a ton of conversations, and as he finished his speech about his travels she half expected to nod her head to him, and go back to the Creek. She was feeling rather different anyhow, something that a long nap would probably fix. However his question caught her by surprise and her eyes fell on his for a moment and then averted. Old habits died hard it seemed. Charcoal Ksvae.

She wondered how he had known she had left the Mountain so that she could be properly mated. However it was not too much to assume that Tobin had told him, it had been his job to do so anyhow. Wip wondered if Sinistra knew the past medic, and would not find it surprising if he did or didn't. It seemed Charcoal got around, he was known by many in the Valley, however, when would he have met Sinistra? Do you know him?

Watching fish dart to the lake surface to surprise any of a number of insects resting on the water, Sinistra glanced momentarily to Wip when she spoke her new mate’s name, only to return his gaze to the pond. Charcoal Ksvae, mind repeated, mental card file opening to be flipped through in search of the name and any memories linked to it. No one he had met, that he could recollect, though the name sounded vaguely familiar. If only he could place it… hm…

Well, perhaps he had just heard of the creature in general. Sinistra was fairly up on who was who as far as higher ranked wolves went, and their great fiasco with the Creek had, naturally, inspired a bit of information gathering for “just in case.” Somehow, though, that didn’t seem right. When Wip asked if the two were acquainted, the Novan tilted his head towards her thoughtfully, face contorting to imply he was trying to think, to remember what the hell it was…

Deadlock. Bingo.

Never met him. The Coyote Expedition. Just after he returned to the Salvajes it happened. And when it happened, Ravn had died, and then Sinistra had gone to make sure that the companions of her party had buried her body properly in the DarkLands. He there he had found a dazed and confused Tobin Phase, who come to find out had been pronounced dead with Ravn… He was in the Coyote Expedition, I think. A real fuck up, actually.

x-posted:Sorry for the hold up, life caught up with me and whipped my ass.

Wip raised her wolven brows in interest and her eyes brightened with interest. Not at the mention of her mate, but at the mention of the Expedition. She had heard of it of course, however she had never actually sat down and asked someone about it, about what had gone on. Of course it had been about driving the coyotes out, that much was obvious but was there any underlying reasons that weren’t so obvious? Or had it all just been about war, and if it had what had it been like? Wip had never experienced anything like that, an focused war between two species because where she had grown up her pack had been in absolute control, and nobody had questioned the brain washed cult which Wip had been able to call her family not too long ago.

Her mouth almost went dry with the need, with the urge to actually have this conversation with Sinistra. What would he do if she were to ask him to tell her about the Expedition, she thought perhaps he probably would mind, he probably was busy, since he had stepped back into the world of Alphaship. But what would be the worst he could do? Could he roll on his back and start laughing at her for asking so stupid a question, or perhaps bark at her and tell her he had no time for stupid questions. As uneasy as Sinistra made Wip, even though she hated to admit it, she doubted he would do that to her, or at least hoped. Besides, she had been raised to be a storyteller, and of course trained in the art of telling, and being told stories, and what if she had pups in the future who asked about the Expedition themselves?

Besides, it had been so long since she had gotten to sit and speak to Charcoal. Would you mind telling me about it? The expedition, I mean I’ve heard of it of course, but never actually talked about it with someone. Why did it start? Did something set it off?

To tell her, or not to tell her? Oh, not about the Expedition. Sinistra was no expert in that, but he was fairly well-versed in what had occured just after his return to the Valley — and, moreover, what had occured just prior thereto that had caused it all. Or, more appropriately, this round of it all. But what the black male asked of himself as Wip asked more of him was whether to mention to his former pack mate that her new lover was, well, responsible for a rather egregious oversight that had torn a family apart for months.

An innocent mistake, the Alpha supposed, and how could he blame Charcoal for misstepping in such a poor situation as he had been found? Sinistra himself was no medic anyway; he had some knowledge and training in the field, but his expertise paled in comparison to some. Perhaps he would have made the same error in judgment as the Creek’s somewhat maligned Delta.

Settling down upon the grass, first in a seat and then out-stretching into a full lay upon the slightly damp Earth, the Novan considered his company thoughtfully for a moment after she finished speaking, recollecting all he knew of the story and determining, then, where best to begin. I arrived just before it happened, the wolf finally began, gaze lingering on the water’s surface as he reached back into the depths of his memory, But I had heard stories of the coyotes when I was a puppy, and my family lived on Nova Mountain then. Apparently the coyotes and the wolves here have never been friendly… Sin knew more specifics — though they were far distant legends — and decided in this situation to skip over them in favor of the more recent tale, the one which Wip had actually asked about: the Expedition.

The DarkLands coyotes killed a wolf, I guess. A Forest wolf, but the name momentarily escaped him — all the DarkMoon did remember was that it had, apparently, been a fairly high-ranking canine to meet his match in the Clan. And others were attacked, I think, so the wolves decided to pay back the favor. There were only three packs: Gold Moon, Silver Creek, and Mount Shadow, and each Alpha led a team into the DarkLands to fight, and this he remembered more clearly: the night it had all happened, and the day that followed, when he found that Ravn had died. All under the command of the Gold Moon Alpha, Ravn, who died; her Beta died, as well. This saddened him slightly to think of, but Sinistra and Ravn had never been close family. They were friendly rivals, at absolute best.

But so did the coyote leaders, and the rest of the Clan fled. Then it was over… At least, everyone had thought so. I went to the DarkLands the next day to make sure Ravn had been buried — that’s where I found Tobin. I guess he had been a part of it too, but he couldn’t remember. Pause for effect.

Then we found out that he was really the Forest Beta, and couldn’t remember that, either. I don’t know how it all happened, really, that they left him there…
