Private for Sarah and her Sinistra. :]
Spin the wheel and I'm a King reborn!I'm a slave to karma. {in character}
Another one of those bright, warm and sunny summer days had taken over the Salavje Valley yet again. When there was once endless cloudy days and snow there was now heat and sun, perfect for any creature who reveled in the warmer weather that summer brought. Most of the grass had long since turned into it's familiar golden color and the rivers' flow had long since receded to something akin to a large stream though that was probably an underestimate. Not that it really mattered, as long as it was cold and deep enough to swim in, that was good enough for him.
Today Chehalis had decided to return to his first home here in the Salavje Valley: the fern laden forests known as Sterling Waters. He'd been dead set on visiting there a few days ago but that strange dizzy spell had hit him, forcing him to take a day off from exploration. It had been an unusual occurrence and the very thought of it still irked him -- he hadn't been able to conclude what had caused it and the answers he did come up with never made any sense in the long run. Perhaps it had just been a quirk, a lapse in attention which caused him to slip under the water. No, no... that couldn't have been it. Ah the obliviousness of the sick and diseased.
But all worry and troublesome thoughts fled when he caught sight of the green ferns and welcoming paths through Sterling Waters. The lanky male let out a small woof, bounding forward and past the ferns towards the deeper parts of the territory. Nothing had changed here! The ferns were still there, the small creeks. Oh look, there was that boulder he used to sleep by! Chehalis was grinning like a kid in a candy store. He remembered his foolish dream of starting his own pack here because he'd been so disgruntled by the move back to the Mount he'd never known. Chehalis laughed softly to himself, stepping over a small tree that had fallen over the path. Like he could run a pack. No, he was content with where he was now. No worries and not a care in the world.
The tawny male continued down the path, amber gaze roving over his old stomping grounds. Even after all this time, this place still felt like home.
Old memories never die.

So there was something in the water.
At least, that was what Lorcan suggested when they had met a night or so previous. He had fallen ill after drinking from the Cascades and implied others met similar fates — although, to be fair, it might well have been caused by something else and taken that long to manifest in whomever was affected. Still, Sinistra felt duty-bound to travel to the water’s edge and look for himself. He had yet to decide whether he would do any more than look and, perhaps, lean down and smell: if there was something whacked about the river, the Alpha sure as hell didn’t want to touch it.
The clearest cut path to the Valley’s water supply was through Hickory Stream, but he had been lakeside not but a few days ago and noticed nothing odd about the water there: so, instead, he would go to the other side of Silver Creek, a pack Sin didn’t wish to have much to do with at the moment — no, he wasn’t angry with them, but they had caused Nova such grief that, well, best to stay away, doubtful they would be throwing any party any time soon in celebration of his return. Still, the ebony canine found himself near to Silver Creek in Sterling Waters.
And he was not alone — shortly after crossing in to the territory from the heart of the Sabbia Valley, golden eyes lighted on a grey figure exploring the area. It was no surprise that the other was a complete stranger: Sinistra had been gone for nearly three months, and even when he had been around as leader of Nova Mountain before his departure, the percentage of residents of the region he had met was negligible. There were so many wolves, it was a wonder anyone could keep track of their own packs, forget everyone else.
As the wolf was not averse to an impromptu meeting, and recognizing the potential to discuss the water issue with the other — perhaps he was more local to the river and lake, perhaps he had noticed or heard something himself — Sinistra called out — Hello.

Wow, this ended up surprisingly short. It felt longer... :\
Spin the wheel and I'm a King reborn!I'm a slave to karma. {in character}
The tawny wolf had been so lost in his memories that he'd forgotten to pay attention to the more real parts of his surroundings. Not that it was a particularly dangerous endeavor considering the Valley he lived in but then again, he'd been away for over seven months, who knew what kind of personas lurked here now. And thus, when the voice greeted him, the lanky Mexican nearly bolted forward but held steady, fiery gaze searching for the owner of said voice. Chehalis soon spotted the larger, obsidian male amongst the ferns and offered up a smile, dipping his muzzle in return. "Hey there, nearly scared me outta my skin there."
Chehalis turned fully to face the unknown male now, sniffing the air tentatively; a distinctly mountain pine scent. Ah, so he was from Nova Mountain. The only logical pack considering he knew his own Mount pack pretty well even if most of them he knew by scent alone. The amber-eyed youth took a few steps forward, smile still alight on his face. "Chehalis." He offered, rusty ears pressing forward atop his head as he continued, "What brings ya to these parts if ya don't mind me askin'?"
The Mount male suddenly felt the slight pounding of a headache soon to manifest itself in his brain, ears flicking back uncertainly for a split second before popping back up again. It was strange, he'd never gotten headaches in the past, at least, not until that spell he had at White Rose Lake. But now they were a daily occurrence. But no, he wouldn't worry about that now. Instead he would focus his attention on his new acquaintance and hope that the pounding would fade.

In his experience, among most creatures, wolves were fairly observant — and they had every reason to be, with their extra-perceptive senses — so it never failed to amaze him how many residents of the Salvajes could be “snuck up” upon. Perhaps they were too comfortable in their own surroundings for their own good. If anyone ever wanted to take this place by storm, they would probably be greeted with little more than a shocked jump of surprise and a mutedly confused smile… Hm. He would have to report that back to Nymphe, they were planning to overtake the world, after all, and the domination started here. That part of their task would be easy.
Sorry, Sinistra said blandly, although he still thought it quite odd, and so implied with a pointed wolven lift of one eyebrow area. After three months of traveling, the wolf thought to himself cynically, I had somehow forgotten I was back in Lalaland where everyone is too entranced by the magical fairies to pay attention to the world around them… Not to say that the Novan did not enjoy life in the Valley — clearly, or he wouldn’t have returned — it was just that this was quite possibly the most oddly inhabited place he had ever set foot.
Sinistra, the Alpha offered when the stranger introduced himself as “Chehalis.” His next question brought them to another thing that the black canine found strange about this place: everyone thought they had to know everyone else’s business, even perfect strangers. True, they were all just trying to be polite or would so claim. It was just a very convoluted way of being polite, if you asked him, which , quite wisely, no one bothered to. I’m looking for boogey monsters in the river, Sin said quite sincerely, You?

I’m looking for boogey monsters in the river. Chehalis blinked, peering at the obsidian wolf -- Sinistra, with a rather curious expression for a fleeting moment before smiling good-naturedly. Perhaps it was the truth, perhaps not. Either way, Chehalis wasn't too keen on inquiring as to the wolf before him was partially insane -- he seemed sincere enough. "Just visiting. It's been a while since I've been here."
He said, looking around briefly before returning his amber gaze to the Novian male. "Boogey monsters, eh?" A pause -- he tilted his head to the left, thinking for a moment before nodding. "Never heard of that but hey, seems fair enough. What with everyone gettin' sick n'all, anything seems possible nowadays."
This brought about a whole new realization within Chehalis -- the water! Was it the real culprit behind the illnesses and his own headaches? But how was that possible? The water hadn't been weird before, so why would it suddenly be like that now? So many questions and so little answers -- it was driving him crazy! He returned his attention to Sinistra once more, "D'you think there's a solution to all of this?"

Just visiting… it seemed a dull comparatively dull pasttime to searching for boogey monsters, but then, Sinistra had to remind himself, not everyone could be quite as interesting as he. In fact, few could compare…
Fair enough, indeed, the black wolf thought as he nodded agreeably to Chehalis when he spoke — visiting this place actually was quite odd, for as far as the ebony Alpha could see, there was not a single living thing to “visit” outside of the lush ferns. Perhaps the stranger knew something he did not (undoubtedly, but the reverse was also true). Finding the ensuing commentary to be equally as off-hand, Sin only nodded once more, musing to himself about why anyone would come here to visit knowing that the water was the source of the illness.
Maybe he didn’t know… and, of course, he was there too, so, once again, the reverse was also true — why search for boogie monsters in an infested swampland (well, other than that being the most likely place to find them… but why risk a life to search for a fairy tale?). Eyeing Chehalis for a moment after the other spoke once more, Sinistra’s gaze flickered from him to the distance just behind him, pondering. What kind of a question…
All of this? He repeated, now looking from one side of himself to the other to survey, We could burn it, I suppose. I never liked ferns. Might smoke out that monster while we’re at it.

Sorry for the wait. I was internetless for a few days there. :]

As the responce came, Chehalis couldn't help but peer at the Novian male with a bit of muddled curiousity. What in the world was he talking about? Were they not just talking about the so-called boogie-monster in the water? It was then Chehalis thought back to the way he'd versed his question and the way it seemed to have popped out of nowhere. Ah, that was it. Chehalis chuckled softly, shaking his head, an amused smile playing on his lips. "But how would that flesh out a boogey monster who clearly lives in the river?"
Chehalis let his gaze wander then, slowly roving over the lush green ferns of Sterling Waters -- he would never have the courage to burn it, even if it was the answer to any sort of problem. Wait, hold on. Back to the subject at hand. "How many in your pack are sick? I've tallyed mine up t'about nine as of last night." He looked back to Sinistra, bright amber gaze locking with the male's own. "D'you really think it's the water?"

Ask vague questions, receive odd answers…
No clue. With a shrug, Sinistra frowned confusedly, considering how Chehalis happened to know so much with such certainty about boogey monsters, who were notoriously mysterious and secretive about their lifestyles. He was only checking the river for incidental boogey monsters — kind of a routine security procedure, like one would check the back seat of one’s car before getting into it alone at night… not because something was known to live there, but just in case someone happened to be there at the time… But then, boogey monsters aren’t very predictable, so who knows. It could work.
Nine ill? The Novan had suspected his fern-rummaging friend was from Mount Shadow, but such a number seemed grossly disproportionate considering that the mountain should have had its own water supply… nine gravely insane? Perhaps he was mistaken of Chehalis’ home pack. That count only made sense of Silver Creek or Strawberry Fields… he hoped. I’m not sure, Sin said, furrowing his brow uncertainly, But I am sure it’s the water… It was the only thing that made sense, in his mind, although to be fair, other possibilities had yet to be evaluated in that mind of his… Where are you from?

I'm really sorry about the wait on this. :(

"Hmm..." Chehalis muttered, amber eyes switching towards the direction of the Cascades, rusty ears perked in question. Perhaps there was the slight possibility of some sort of fiend in the water. The Mexican blinked, tail swinging once behind his rump -- then again, perhaps Sinistra was merely pulling his leg. "Really now? Well, I guess y'learn somethin' new every day then." A pause -- "Yeah..."
There were many ill within the boundaries of Mount Shadow, some more gravely ill than others. It was a frightening and almost sickeningly worrying sight to behold -- what would happen to them? Would the sickness progress into something more death-laden that it was now or would it merely fade away with the passage of time? Chehalis briefly wondered if he was sick as well, completely oblivous to the signs. No, that couldn't be the case. He was fit as a fiddle. "Mount Shadow." He stated simply in reply to Sinistra's question.

It’s no problem. :)
Nova Mountain, came a smooth reply in kind once Chehalis introduced his home pack. So they were fellow mountain-dwellers… Only a handful of wolves from there were known to the Novan leader: Cypress was one, but he was gone; Shingle, Bryndel… Maui! Ah, it was true, Sinistra had yet to meet a single resident of Mount Shadow whom he disliked even just a little. It was a superlative Silver Creek did not share, nor even Strawberry Fields… matter of fact, it could be said that the other’s was the only pack in the Salvajes who had a perfect record as far as Sin was concerned.
I think there’s more than a boogey monster in the water, now he was going to be honest about what was going on, now that it didn’t seem like he was being bombarded by a nosy stranger. But I don’t know what — but I do know that it isn’t safe to drink, if it’s making everyone sick. I wouldn’t touch it. The prospect was terrifying. There was something wrong with the water. It was already getting bad. It could only get worse. Better spread the word… |

I really like your new table. What font is that if ya don't mind me asking? :)

Nova Mountain. Now there was a place Chehalis was fond of for two reasons. One, because Bronx lived there and he was a good friend and mentor. And two, because it had spectacular views and was a bit bigger than his own forested Mount. But those two reasons were definitely not enough push for him to switch over to the Novian side -- he loved his own Mount and his friends far too much for that. Why was he even pondering this to begin with? There was a crisis going on!
Chehalis nodded thoughtfully, amber eyes downcast for a moment before he looked up at Sinistra again, curiousity evident on his face. "Is there any way t'figure out what's in the water? I mean, the Cascades were never like this before, at least not that I know of." He tried to recall a time where he had heard of the main water source being tainted but couldn't recollect anything. At Sinistra's suggestion, Chehalis nodded, a grave smile on his obsidian lips. "I'll be sure to do that."
It was then he had a thought, an idea and a viable theory. "Y'know.. maybe some kinda poisonous plant is growin' upstream. Like, it's pollen is getting into the water or somethin'."

Sorry for the delay.. the font is Verdana (speech is Georgia.. :) I’m going to wrap this up here, you don’t have to reply again, I don’t think, unless you’d like to.. :)
I’m sure there is, Sinistra said emptily — implying that while there was presumably an answer, he hadn’t the foggiest idea how to figure it out. Logically, someone ought to head upstream and search for signs of a source. But if they found nothing, then what? There was no easy answer, but there was a wealth of knowledge in the wolves of the Salvajes (or so he hoped…). Maybe someone would know something about this kind of thing, and maybe everyone else would be smart enough to listen. For the Nova leader’s part, he had just enough medical knowledge not to die of a bug bite.
Could be, the Alpha nodded agreeably to Chehalis’s suggestion. It would take a comedy of events for that to happen, because wolves had been in the Salvajes nearly the same time last year, and they had lived in the Valley for many years prior… and this had never before happened. But then, the wolves of the years prior had mostly lived on Nova Mountain, and they had not used the Cascades as a water source… maybe the Shadow wolf was on to something. Eying the nearest puddle of water amongst the rushes as if it were itself a boogey monster about to rise and attack them, Sin said: I think I’ll send someone from Nova Mountain to go downstream and find out what’s there. There’s a lot to do, the creature continued, now looking at Chehalis once more, So I think I’ll head back — let me know if you find anything out? And good luck, he offered, already beginning to pivot back towards the homeland. Indeed, now it was confirmed that the water was bad, there was a lot to do… |
