Unusually, Sinistra had beat the sun to rising. Leaving his mate in the comfort of their den the wolf had departed early, hours before daylight would arrive. An idea had come to him in the middle of a deep, comfortable sleep — and as much as the idea of getting up and acting on it was loathsome, if it solved the mysterious illness plaguing the Valley, it was worth a few hours rest lost. The night prior they had held a pack meeting on the slopes of Nova Mountain and a new slew of information had been gained, but nothing worthwhile; he was left to his former plan of scouring the lands, rather aimlessly, for a plant or other growth that would prove useful.

Sin had searched the Plateau, the Forest, and a large portion of their Mountain home. He had even looked, albeit briefly and without as much determination, in Sterling Waters a week or so before when investigating the water, when all of this was first starting. So far, the search had been fruitless. But as he stalked quietly through the night, ignoring all surroundings with one destination in mind, the Alpha hoped all that would change.

Of all the places to look for exotic plants, the black canine could not believe Forbidden Swamp hadn’t been atop his list. As the towering, moss-dripping trees loomed larger and larger in the faint, shadowy distance of the wee morning hours, with each step that drew closer to the marsh came an irritated huff at his own idiocy.

Forbidden Swamp was full of odd things, weird flowers, medicinal plants. Sinistra had been there once just after sunset. A storm had set in and, along with Cypress and Shingle from the other mount pack, he had been stuck among the muck. There was no storm brewing now, but the cool night air meeting the warm, soggy ground had inspired a thick fog. Navigation would not be easy. As he finally reached the territory’s edge, suddenly the idea didn’t seem all that great any more. Exploring a creepy, muddy, probably diseased, foggy and Forbidden Swamp in the dead of night?

I must have caught it, Sin said to himself in mock horror, snapping his head around to one side as the snap of a branch caught his attention. There was nothing to be seen. Unfortunately. Can’t turn back now, the leader whispered again, returning all attention to the trail leading into the wetland’s unseen depths. Gingerly, towards the heart of the Swamp his paws carried. Hopefully it would be worth it.

It was like a set of drums had taken residence in the young she-wolf's mind. The constant pulsing through her brain hurt as each noise that whispered itself through the air seemed twice as loud, and perhaps vicious intentions. She had been told to sleep, and she had wanted to. The wound to her leg hadn't healed much, leaving it stiff with such little chance to exercise it, and it remained a limp to her frame, and slowed her down horribly. Yet the blank pages kept turning, and she couldn't quite figure out where she was.. or why. Or, for that matter, who she had left behind.

It was her aqua eyes that finally rested upon a figure, only faintly hearing the voice despite the close proximity. He seemed so familiar, and yet his words were slurred to her throbbing head, and she emitted a low whimper. It was those blank pages that kept flipping open to her, causing a barrier to the facts that she just simply couldn't reach but knew they existed. Bronx? She murmured the words, stumbling forward a bit before she leaned against a tree, the black wolf with those stunning yellow eyes blurring before her. Everything was always spinning these days. Bronx, the word left her again, believing without a doubt that the male before her was none other than her beloved brother. I don't like this place. It smells bad.. I want to go home..

The words that were spoken could be that of a child, yet her voice remained steady.. almost demanding. Please, she whispered, lowering her muzzle as her body swayed.. ready to follow the world to the ground as it tried to knock her from her feet.

Another noise. He froze in place, gripped by the thought of being torn limb from limb and innard from innard by some dreadful, many-eyed monster. They would find his body parts strewn about the Valley and, according to his imagination, they would tell the puppies to put the puzzle pieces together for their own diversion while the adults did something important like try to figure out whether or not they were all going to go crazy and die. It would be the most unglorious end a wolf ever suffered.

The saddest part was that Sinistra was not afflicted by the poisoned water and had absolutely no reason to be thinking such paranoid, psychotic thoughts.

His dying wish was only that the puppies enjoyed the game…

His next wish, when he heard an all too familiar voice cracking out through the thick fog, was that the damn monster would hurry up and have it over with. Damn it, the shadow-shrouded black wolf thought, peering through the trees. A hundred wolves in this Valley to run into and every time I go somewhere, she’s the one who’s there. This time, though, would clearly be different from their last encounter. This time, Allure thought he was Bronx. Good thing? Bad thing?

Sinistra was at a complete loss there. Go along with her, or try to argue and risk sending her into some frothing, delusional rage? Allure? The Alpha asked quietly, trying not to upset her, eyeing her like she was a very dangerous, deranged felon. Bronx isn’t here… Trying to be as gentle about it as possible, the subject was quickly changed: Why don’t you sit down… Before you pass out or something…

Goodness... this post is confusing in her delusional.. little state.

__________________________

Bronx isn't here. The words caused her eyes to snap to the black wolf before widening, a dawning horror coming to the petite female. Isn't here.. What do you mean he isn't here.. Yet it remained more of a statement rather than a question, the faded aqua eyes quickly snapping to glance around, waiting for the sick words the strange male had spoken to be nothing more than a sick joke and for her brothers face to pop out.. pleased to see her and ready to take her home. No. Not to Nova Mountain.. her real home.

No. No..nono.. no... Her frame took to trembling, the female backing away from Sinistra as her plume lashed the air. No. She repeated the words, trying to reassure herself. Bronx was not a blank page to her mind. He was here. He had to be here. Wasn't he here only a moment ago? Bronx wouldn't go. He can't go. He's all I have.

She paused in her babble, eyes glaring to the black male now. No. Just to clarify that she wouldn't accept this sudden disappearance of her brother.

Confused himself, Sinistra blinked when Allure spoke again, trying to figure out where her mind was — trying to figure out how he could get two steps ahead of where she was going in there, so he could keep the situation from getting far too far out of hand. Or, paw. Whatever. What do you mean he isn’t here? I mean- He quickly began to try to explain, that he wasn’t here, but he was here, just not HERE, but a sudden barrage of definitive no-no-nos left black muzzle gaping without making a sound. Okay.

At least she hadn’t accused him of murdering Bronx and trying to ruin her life. Something in the back of his mind said, You just wait…

Actually, Sin wasn’t even sure that she recognized him now that he wasn’t Bronx, since Bronx was not here in one sense but was here in another, more general sense… Stepping back tentatively as the no chanting continued, perhaps, the idea presented, it was for the best that she did not realize who he was. Who knew what would happen then.

No, once again trying to sound as gentle and unthreatening as possible, keeping in mind that instability could make even the kindest of words sound like death promises — eesh. Whoever was responsible for this sickness was at the top of his ass-kicking list for all this trouble. He’s here… he’s just… out… But he’ll be back. I hope.

Bronx was Allure's own stereotype of a pillar of strength, and it was only natural that during her vulnerability that she seek him out and cling to him like a leech. The stranger's words instantly calmed her, her frame stilling as her eyes, though faded with the illness, glanced to him with hope. .. Really? She paused in thought. Did he go to find our sister? After all, her sister would find them eventually, right?

The nausea made her head lurch, yet no matter how hard she tried, nothing ever came from her stomach to ease her. No sense of escape, or relief. Just the sloshing pain, and the wish to die, to end it all. Her eyes roamed his figure, the small smirk that Allure had slowly growing to her slender muzzle. The kind that merely told the world that she tolerated, and was just passing by. You're kind of cute, aren't you? Kind of she supposed. Yet as her eyes fell to his own, they widened once more in recognition, and her frame took to trembling, her paws now frantically turning to scramble away. No.. no, I know you. I don't want to know you. Or her. A vision of a white wolf stood not far off, the low frame of Calliope stiff, her ivory fangs almost as pearly as her pelt. She was here, standing behind him, and her eyes remained transfixed to her hallucination. Can you both go away now, please? I want Bronx..

On second thought, the anger felt by a delusional Allure thinking Bronx had departed entirely should have been shared. Where was Bronx? Where was anyone? Any one of those altruists who had stood up at the pack meeting and pledged to be caretakers? There were two — that he knew of — a measley two severely ill members of Nova Mountain. One of them was a puppy and surely under the very watchful eye of her parents. That left how many caretakers who should have been, oh, he didn’t know, really…

…caretaking, perhaps?! How many of them to watch one sick wolf? What in the seven levels of hell were they all doing? When he returned to the peak, if they weren’t all frantically searching for their missing, delusional, violently ill pack mate they were going to wish they had suffered such a pleasant fate as falling delusionally, violently ill because it would not compare to what he was going to do to them.

Caretakers, my ass.

Meanwhile, Allure had finally recognized him (after a brief moment of thinking he was cute, which had caused a rather discomforting perk of an eyebrow and a whole new slew of caretaker cursing under his breath…). Under normal circumstances, Sinistra might have been put-off by what the Iota said — she didn’t want to know him — but it was the most sane thing the ill creature had said yet. She’ll go, he said, craning head around to give a very stern, pointed look at a nearby shrub and gesturing that it ought to… leave… although the chances of that actually happening were really quite slim (thereby making the whole situation really quite realistic, he thought). Sin only hoped that it would be enough to convince Allure’s imagination that no one else was there. At least, not any more.

And I’ll help you find Bronx… okay?

Her small bi-toned frame finally slumped to the ground, limbs trembling violently and she gasped for breath, eyes on the white vision. She wanted to take that wolf and chew it's ear off, but she couldn't. Not when she was so dizzy. So nauseated. So emotionally and physically exhausted.

Yet he told the bitch to go, and with a snarl, the white female had vanished, Allure's own inked lips pulling back to bare her teeth to the retreating 'bush' How very brave of her. He spoke once more, and she gave another shake of her muzzle, panic in those dull eyes. No you wont. He wouldn't help her. You don't give a shit.. You just wanted the pretty one. A glazed expression crossing her features, the she-wolf quickly rose to her unsteady paws, quickly turning her frame and beginning to trot away. She would find Bronx herself. She didn't need him anymore because she had put that behind her.

Well, at least the bush had obeyed. One crisis had been averted, giving way to… another crisis. Still, small victories added up after a while. That was his theory, anyway.

When Allure crumpled to the ground, although rather disconcerting considering how clearly ill she was, it was a relief that if nothing else there was no longer the risk of her falling head first with a thunk. That was only a valid relief until the moment she stood again, just as unsteadily, told him off and started to wobble away defiantly. Hm, Sin mused, sighing, blinking, watching from his place for a moment, all trying to figure out what to do next, …if it weren’t for acting like she’s about to pass out, I wonder how I would know she was sick.

Then he followed. What choice was there? Shrug and walk off and hope some caretaker finally fixed their own medical problems (head up ass syndrome) and found her, took her back to safety? In the mean time she would “kill” every shrub she came across, and for good measure, every wolf who was in any way white… Moving along slowly behind her, Sin called out to the mark in this new game of follow the leader: Where are we going…?

Apologies for the.. -ahem- mild? language..

__________________________

With a small stumble here, and then another over there, the female had officially managed to lose herself in the god forsaken swamp. Not only that, but with the one wolf she least wanted to see now, other than his royal bitch mate. Giving off a frustrated sigh, she turned her muzzle to the sound of his voice as she noted he had taken to following her, only to smack it in to an offending branch. Seething at it, she ducked her muzzle under it to better glare at the black male. We're not going anywhere. I'm going to go find Bronx.. as far away from you as possible. You.. you.. It took a few moments to think of the worst insult she could, but she puffed up her chest and her eyes flared to life as she hissed it out. Fuck head. Obviously, the girl needed some lessons in insulting others.

And onwards she went, plume lashing the air in agitation, her movements taking the usual feline sway, with, perhaps, a drunken walk. It didn't take long, though. Red dots began to blotch out the disgusting scenery before her before quickly switching to black, and she lowered her muzzle, her body stilling as for moments, she couldn't see a thing.

Watching her stumble was almost making him nauseous — not to mention he had stumbled a few times himself, paying more attention to where Allure was going and what she was doing than to the path in front of him. In fact, Sinistra had just regained his balance from snagging a forepaw on a straggling trip-rope branch when words cut through the momentary silence. He looked up just in time to witness the contact between muzzle and branch, winced, and oohed sympathetically under his breath.

But that made no difference whatsoever in their “relationship”: taking a few quicker-paced steps forward trying to close the gap between them a bit, Sin’s mouth opened to speak, to ask her to stop before injuring herself any further, but was quickly silenced by what was unquestionably the most childish insult ever. Okay, the onyx wolf muttered quietly, gaze lingering upon the once-again retreating form, Why don’t you tell me how you really feel, he continued to himself sarcastically, trying to force back a wholly inappropriate smile.

Scusa! Now calling out and bounding gingerly over the dangerous Swamp floor, Sinistra once again endeavored to close the gap. You know, I just talked to Bronx, Time for a new approach, And he said for your ass to follow me back home and wait for him there. So where are you going?

Her steps stopped as he mentioned Bronx, her ears perking forward as she cast a suspicious glare over her shoulder to the male. The sun still had not risen yet, and her eyes quickly cast about the surrounding area. Disgusting mud between her paws, the low cry of a night owl. It caused a shiver to caress along her spine before she glared back to him, for only a mere second the blank pages beginning to fill, and a lingering sob escaping her parted jowls. I can't do this anymore.. God, Sin.. Please make it stop.

She didn't know what she was begging for. For the nausea to release it's grasp on her, for her head to stop. For sense to take a place to her mind once more.. Allure was a girl who believed in cause and consequence, and she knew that something was off. Perhaps she begged for her own death, or for him to simply leave her be, and to allow her emotions to heal. For him to call off his wild mate, so she can merely live in peace. She slumped to defeat of the world, her frame slowly lowering as she quickly shifted her eyes from him, barely recognizing him now. She only offered a nod, knowing she would follow him if it meant it would take her to Bronx.

Bingo. Except, it really had been far more easier to deal with — really — when Allure had been defiant and suspect of him. Now the tide had turned, and while it meant he no longer was subject to insults that would make a puppy giggle madly at their simplicity, it also meant Sinistra actually had to be sympathetic and understanding. Not to say that he hadn’t already been, but the situation would be much less complex if she would have kept calling him names and argued resistantly all the way back to Nova Mountain. That way nothing was too friendly, sickness or no.

It’s okay, the shadowed canine said quietly, slowly closing the remaining distance between them. You’re going to be fine, Sin continued, nodding and, barely audibly, sighing. This sucked, to be perfectly ineloquent, all of it. The illness, the fighting, the drama… the fact he had no idea how to fix it without causing any more blow outs or inevitably losing.

Let’s rest here for a while, that would give her a chance to regain some strength and it would be much easier to navigate out of the swamp once the sun had risen. His cure-searching would have to wait — although he also figured he could scout about the general area while they waited for dawn. Then we’ll go find Bronx.

And hopefully that would be acceptable.

She shifted her muzzle away from him as he came closer, wishing he would go far away now. Far, far away. Perhaps to the other side of the earth now. And to take the evil white thing with him. The moment he hinted to taking a rest, her faded eyes quickly shot to his own golden ones, her mouth opening to a defiant protest when the world went black and her body swayed. Down for the second time, the bi-toned female stilled, her eyes glazed as she deepened her breaths. Her small body strewn upon her side, she lifted one paw to her muzzle and licked at a fresh wound, much like a feline would. She said nothing to her 'companion', merely taking to silence.

Can we go to the Creek.. Den will take me in. I can send for Bronx.. he'll come. We can be away. Far away. Yes.. The question was at first directed to him, but she continued to babble to herself, to improve her life. To get the hell away from her prison. Slowly she stopped, settling her paw down once more, her head resting on a tree root. A shiver coursing her body, she once again took a glance to the black male, a scowl soon setting to her features. You know I would never be mates with you. Mother may want it.. She trailed off, her eyes taking in Sinistra yet seeing brilliant white fur rather than black. The male she was to be betrothed to, only a few years ago. But it's old fashioned. I'm taking Snowflake away from here.. we're leaving. So.. go away now.

Resting seemed like more and mor of a brilliant idea the longer their conversation continued: Allure found herself grounded again, which caused Sinistra to step forward concernly, though he stopped himself from approaching too closely — trying to make sure she wasn’t injured (or at least not too badly), while also trying not to give any reason to be defended against.

Second to resting, going to Silver Creek wasn’t really a bad idea. While the thought was somewhat unsettling in general (the place, he felt, was just best avoided), it was much closer than Nova Mountain and they would certainly find help there as well as someone who could go find Bronx. That was what he hoped would have happened, if they decided to go to their closest neighbors: the Alpha could scarcely imagine they would be turned away.

That would be very bad for interpack diplomacy.

Then they were back discussing the whole love triangle issue once again — or so he thought, until Mother entered the equation to complicate things even further. Wait… Sin stopped, blinking perplexedly, …your Mother knew about this?! Old fashioned? The wolf then mouthed without making a sound, looking around the Swamp as if to take a survey of the trees — is this making sense to any of you all?

Snowflake? More hallucinations, apparently. Odd. Listen, Sinistra insisted, albeit gently, Let’s wait here for the sun, then all… six… of us… can go find Bronx, okay?

Her body stilled, small shivers coursing through her spine as she silenced herself, not answering the male, though her eyes quickly scanned the area looking for the 'six' he talked about, her own pelt bristling in paranoia. She quickly nudged her nose closer to the root of the tree, caressing her cheek against the rough ground as she attempted to settle in, though her eyes continued to glare to the black stranger.

Once I can walk again.. She muttered quietly, though gave a quick shrug. Leaving the valley, you know. Away from the bullshit. The.. drama. Her eyes glazed over as pain surged through her stomach. Away from them.

Yet no sooner had she spoken the words did she quickly shoot her frame upright, trembling, not from the sickness, but from fear. Bronx! Oh god.. ohgodohgod. Bronx will come with me, wouldn't he? She swallowed hard, soon standing up and slinking behind the tree and away from the golden eyes of her Alpha, wanting nothing to do with him. A girl couldn't sleep with him lurking about. Laying back down to curl herself to a ball, she inhaled deeply. She would be on the move soon.

If you can walk again, he thought. Except he didn’t really think it: it was as if someone else had thought that and implanted it into the back of his mind secretly for him to stumble over at the worst possible time to realize what could happen if no cure was ever found. Would they all just stay insane forever? Would they keep getting worse and worse and eventually die? Or would they just recover, almost miraculously, and go on as if nothing had ever happened? What if there was no cure? How guilty it made him feel.

Them? Who? The six he had spoken of? Were they really there? Now this was all too much for his mind to comprehend — concerned, the Alpha craned his head around to one side than the other to investigate what was behind him. Nothing but the same trees and low misty fog that had plagued the Swamp the entire evening. There wasn’t even the faint hoot of an owl or the dissenting crick of a cricket. It was eerie.

You don’t have to leave, Sin said earnestly, now looking back towards the suffering creature having satisfied his fear that others really were lurking, that even in her insanity she still realized something he did not. But there was no such thing, or not in reality, at least. Neither does Bronx… I can make it stop…

Right?

Continue this thread at SC or NM? Or shall we let it come to a close?

__________________________

His words barely registered, yet she recognized his voice, her own lips curling back to reveal glistening teeth as he attempted to speak soothing words. He didn't seem to register the fact that he was the problem. Him and his little bitch. Yet it soon faded, pain throbbing throughout her body and she just loosened her jowls as one word slipped past. Promise. Whispered through the quiet night, the black female waited. If it was for him to finally leave her in peace, or for Bronx to find her, or even for her life to ebb away, she couldn't fathom. She merely rested, counting in her head, waiting for daylight to rear it's head to the skies.

She breathed quietly, hoping to trick him in to believing she was asleep. At an opportune moment, she would wait until he too fell victim to fatigue and then she would steal away in the night. Leave this place. Her destination was unknown even to her, though a faint flicker of sanity probed her mind to try to come up with a plan. It did not happen though, for soon she indeed fell asleep, her head slumping closer to her paws as her pain, for the precious moment, fell away.

Let’s have it come to a close, I think, since it’s taken me so many eternities to get off my lazy ass and reply.. :)

Wander {Aimlessly}
Promise, he said as quickly as the word registered in his mind and he could vocalize a response, not wanting to leave any hesitance open for interpretation — not that he would have hesitated to express the sentiment that all of this had gone much too far and was becoming far too tiring… enough, as far as Sinistra was concerned, was enough. But then, he had felt that way in the beginning, after their first confrontation, when Calliope and he had decided to leave. They hadn’t planned to returned, and perhaps they should have stuck to that.

It would have been easier, that was for sure…

Thankfully, it seemed they had finally reached a peace, or at least an impasse in their argument as Allure fell into sleep (or otherwise passed out). Sighing — odd, he felt surprisingly physically untired for this time of night — but the Novan was exhausted in every other way, and despite the halfway “happy” ending to this meeting, a dreadful feeling remained that there was more to come… even with his promise.
