For Sinistra. ^^
in this lifetime it better be the right time the first time might be your last time
Today had been just one of many days passed where he had been unable to do anything but sit and watch his world crack and shatter. Sitting beneath a tree long dead right outside the official pack territory, Element was going over everything that had been going on.
The gnarled and twisted limbs of the old tree seemed to reflect Element’s thoughts – curving and winding and all in all leading to no where but a further stretch into nothing. Releasing a sigh from his parted lips, he turned his silvery gaze out across the land below. The view from Mount Shadow each evening had always been something he’d taken pleasure in watching, but now his weary eyes took it in absently. Element was tired and all in all defeated, unsure of his next step. Thanks to the illness his own mate barely knew who he was, and no matter how hard he had been trying nothing had improved her condition. He had started to dread watching the sun set across the Salvajes because inside, Element knew that come morning she’d be a little sicker and a little more lost. And with that she’d be a little farther away from him than she was now.
Choking back a growl that wanted to burst from deep in his chest his eyes narrowed at the scene before him. Releasing his gaze from the sunset he turned instead to his surroundings. This sickness had come from somewhere, most likely the water from what he’d heard, so there had to be a cure somewhere too. Nature always had a remedy for everything. There was still no news of any improvement from any of the ill wolves, and the epidemic was still spreading. He knew there were pack members searching for a cure, but none of it had led up to anything yet. How much time did they have before this thing spread to everyone? How much time until it got worse? How much time did the wolves who were horribly ill have before they got even worse?
With all of this tumbling in swift currents through his mind, Element rose to his feet, ready for a jaunt across the territory. He’d been out cure searching a bit on his own – not as much as others, but just nosing around at the possibilities. Mostly he’d been taking care of anyone he could, trying to comfort them and make sure they had any of the necessities they needed. When he was able, he’d left the mountain and done the same for others along with going out and trying to find all the information he could get his paws on. The more he knew the better he had a chance of helping. Now it was time for him to do some searching around home base. Kiriana was asleep, and he knew she probably wouldn’t wake until late morning. During the night he could search all he wanted, and that was the Zeta’s new plan.

Forbidden Swamp had disappointed him. Every hope had been placed in the wetlands, that there they might find something worthwhile, but there was nothing — just like there had been nothing in Wild Fire Forest, or Silent Moon Plateau, or on Nova Mountain. Nothing but spreading sickness and diminishing hopes, including his own: moping, he hated that the most. There had to be an answer somewhere. It couldn’t be too far away. Why couldn’t anyone find it? All the wolves in the Valley with so many different backgrounds and experiences… the longer it went on, every day that passed, the outlook only grew bleaker. Maybe there really was nothing.
Sinistra was tired and hungry. The long day had begun before sunrise and as the fireball descended the horizon to the west, it showed no signs of ending for the Nova leader. Instead of stopping to rest or eat or drink — he dared not consume anything until reaching the del Nortes — the black wolf pushed on, heading for the first time in his quest to another packland. Nymphe was right: they needed to work together. No, there was no need for interpack search groups or any such nonsense, but they needed to share information at least.
Through Lilac Valley the journey continued at a steady, forced pace: Sin knew if he slowed or stopped it would be a doubly difficult task to start again with how thirsty and exhausted he was growing. Hopefully, someone from the Mount would be out and about the borders and give him a place to spend the night; information could be shared, a brief run through of plants commenced so he could check Mount Shadow off his list of places to search… tomorrow the Alpha would head back to the homeland, probably just as empty-handed as he had departed. Still, he had to try.
The borders of the pack grew ever near with each self-contentious step; so, too, did the unfamiliar but clearly residential scent of another. Someone was guarding the borders — so to speak — and Sinistra couldn’t have been happier when yellow eyes finally came to rest upon the figure underneath a tree, hidden almost completely by the sunset’s shadows merging with equally as black coat. Swallowing with a bit of difficulty, the visitor presented himself in front of the other’s vision so no approach would catch him off guard and proceeded in the wolf’s direction in a friendly, neutral posture. Hello, the canine paused in both speech and step a comfortable distance from the stranger’s resting place. Do you live here?

As he rose from his spot beneath the tree, Element’s ears perked as he picked up the sounds of someone approaching. There was no mistaking the sound of paws across the rocky surface and the light click click as claws tapped at the rock. A top his head his dark ears swiveled towards the source of the noise, and his gaze soon followed. Approaching him at an easy gait was a dark figure, that of another wolf. A bit surprised to see an individual approaching the borders at this time, Element remained silent as the distance between them closed.
A casual hello came from the other, and the Shadower ducked his head in his own greeting, mirroring the words. “Hello.” The stranger spoke again, asking a question this time. Considering the other male momentarily, Element nodded. “Yeah. Element – Zeta of the Mount, here.” He usually cared little for adding his rank into introductions, but the words slipped out as he found himself contemplating the others reason’s for being here. There also seemed to be something about this stranger vaguely familiar, if not just in posture and stance. “And who are you, if I may ask?” The words came calmly, and just to make sure he wasn’t coming across negatively a friendly smile graced the Zeta’s features.
Judging by the time of night and the way the male presented himself it seemed this was nothing more than a check of the lands, maybe a place to sleep or a wolf (like Element had been previously) who was seeking about for information. “If your looking to come on in, I’ll probably have to check the reservation list,” he joked. He didn’t think was just another soul coming to join the pack – usually the types like that came wary and alert, not to mention submissive and half the time downright scared. This fellow definitely wasn’t the type. “Of course, a few good bribes or a good name tend to make the list unimportant.” All in all the words were another wisecrack and a statement for the black males own introduction all in one.

Maybe it was a stupid question to ask, whether the wolf lived here or not, considering it was fairly obvious that he was here and smelled like here and did appear to be protecting the borders. But it was better than standing dumbly and saying nothing except “hello,” and it provided a good segway into introductions, which followed predictably after the other returned a greeting in kind. Element, resident Zeta. Never heard of him, not surprising. Of all the packs, Sinistra knew the fewest from Mount Shadow. Cypress and Shingle and Bryndel; Cypress, he knew, had disappeared. The other two were off his radar.
Sinistra, the wolf answered, Nova Mountain, but did not offer his rank. Perhaps Element already knew. At the moment, regardless, it was inconsequential. This was not really about business that required everyone whose presence he graced to know that he was an Alpha (if they did not already know); this was about finding a cure. And, at the moment, finding some freakin’ water to drink…
Maybe even a place to lay down before he passed out, and feeling a bit light headed at that, the black wolf helped himself to a seat upon the still warm rocky surface of the mountain’s border. I’m looking for a cure, actually… Sin said, ignoring the whole waiting list joke; any other time he would have found it highly amusing, but the circumstances of the situation both personal and in general prevented much excess humor at the moment. Are none of yours sick…? Now he inquired, peering up the slopes behind the border as if expecting to see some telltale sign of whether there was sickness here or not. A quarantine warning or some such.

For a moment he blinked in contemplative silence as the dark male introduced himself. Sinistra? This was Sinistra... alpha of Nova Mountain? Immediately feeling like he should have given the obsidian alpha more respect, he took the present time to lower his head in submission. No, the wolf before him wasn’t his own alpha, but he was an alpha nonetheless and that in itself demanded a good share of respect.
Keeping his posture more submissive clearly submissive now, he listened as Sinistra continued. This caught Element’s interest, and his ears perked noticeably. “I’m guessing there hasn’t been much luck,” he replied. “I haven’t heard any news of a cure or even an idea.” With a more hopeful glance in the alpha’s direction – maybe he had some new and improved news to offer. Probably not, since he had stated he was here looking for a cure’ not spreading news of one. The look faded as quickly as it had appeared.
Taking the chance to throw in his own bit, Element spoke. “I’ve looked around a bit... but I haven’t really found anything at all. The main thing I’ve been doing is trying to take care of who I can,” the easy look on his face faltered a bit as he continued, diverting his gaze to the hard earth. “My mates one of those whose really ill, most of the time she doesn’t even know who I am.” He was fairly sure Sinistra could care less about his personal stories, but the words leaked out anyway. It was clear on the younger males face how much his mate being ill affected him so.
“We have a fairly good share of those that are sick though.” Of course he wished they didn’t, but you couldn’t help what was true and there right in front of you. “It’s a lot of the same symptoms I’ve seen here that I’ve seen elsewhere. Hallucinations, mainly.” Was it the same on Nova Mountain? “How has your pack been faring?” Then, quickly, before he forgot his manner’s entirely he straightened up and added another question. “And, of course – there anything I can do for you while you’re here?” If Sinistra truly was planning to stay for a while Element would like to take the chance to discuss as much as he could about the illness with him. The more anyone knew the better their chances were for finding a cure.

You know, if I were participating in WLC, I would have the fifth most posts of everyone who signed up. Nearly half of those posts I made today. Haha.
You don’t have to, of Element’s sudden show of submission the visitor spoke, flattening his ears as voice trailed off. There really wasn’t any need — nor did he expect submission here or in any other pack area. Respect, certainly, but little more than any other envoy from a neighboring territory… however, what the Zeta chose to do was the Zeta’s business alone, and the gesture was certainly appreciated nevertheless.
Of more concern was the hopeful look when the other asked if there was any luck in cure searching — Sinistra shook his head in the negative, feeling all the more disappointed. Indeed, the fate of the entire Valley did not rest on his shoulders alone, but at the end of each failed day the weary Alpha felt a little less adequate, a little more uncapable. Like it was personal that Nature was hiding medicinal knowledge from him; only could the wolf keep reminding himself that this was, for once, not about him in any way, shape, or form, and to quit being so selfish.
Equally sorry to hear of Element’s sick mate, a joke of his own popped into mind — Want to trade? Oh, he loved Calliope, no question, but there had been times recently when he could only sigh defeatedly and wonder if they had made a mistake by returning. Sinistra hated drama in general, but he especially hated being caught up in the middle of it viz. a bona fide love triangle. Then again, he didn’t exactly want some psycho sickie for a lover either, so one had to take the good with the bad.
I’m sorry to hear that… We have a very ill wolf ourselves, In fact, in a different life, you and I could have been talking about how our mates have both gone bonkers. And one of the Betas’ pups is sick, I’m told. No cure yet though… Clearly depressed by the whole situation, there waas nothing left to do but heave a great sigh.
I was hoping to look on Mount Shadow, even though I’m sure your medics have already done so… Sinistra followed up after an extended pause, tempering his response so as not to inspire offense, as if he thought the Shadow wolves were uncapable of realizing medicine right under their own noses. Not the case, he was just trying to be thorough… And I wouldn’t mind some water, if you have a clean spring?

Hah. I have no idea where I stand really, Oo. Haven't really checked... and haven't really thought about checking. Lol. Lazy, and ay, whoever wins wins. *cough*Takashi*cough* xD
WLC was a good idea though, good inspiration. I've been on a posting spree today too - I think it was mostly to reach my 400. But its stuck around - WHICH is good. I'd love to throw a leash on it and make it stay forever, but I dont think the leash would work for some reason, heh.

Shaking away any shown need for Element to show more clear submission were the source of Sinistra’s next words, and Element responded with a simple agreeing smile. He’d still keep himself at an appreciative level, enough so that the dark male knew he had the Shadower’s respect and attention.
He couldn’t help but feel slightly disappointed as Sinistra shook his head at his hopeful glance, but Element had figured as much. He knew it would be no easy chore, especially not with what seemed like such a small selected few that were taking the matter into their own hands. “Your the first I’ve seen to come so far cure searching,” he sighed. “Even I haven’t gotten to travel much with taking care of Kiriana and all.” An ear flickered and he glanced to the alpha, adding in a position with the name he had just thrown out. “My mate,” he clarified. “I’ve mainly only been able to look around the mountain... but I don’t know quite what to look for. I’m no herbal expert.” He knew a few things, but clearly not enough.
In his turn, Sinistra spoke of their own unfortunate few that had come down ill. His ears lowered at the mention of one of the pups, a frown coming on his face. It was bad enough thinking of friends and family ill, but he couldn’t imagine how a mother or father must feel being unable to help their own child. “I’m sorry to hear it too... I wish there was something we could do about all this already.” He shook his head, put off about the whole ordeal. Everything was such a mess. “Feel free to look around all you please,” he then said. The invitation was open from Element and he was sure it would be to anyone else who knew Sinistra’s purpose on the lands. “Hopefully you’ll find something someone else may have overlooked.” Himself included.
“Oh, sure, of course.” Nodding, Element took a few steps forward, moving around Sinistra and looking back over his shoulder at the male. “Not too far, just right this way.” Turning back and picking up a casual pace, as he led the way to the spring he spoke, offering what information he knew about the illness to the alpha. “I’ve found out it doesn’t pass to others by just being around those who are infected... or at least I’m pretty sure of it. I’ve been around a few of those who were sick and I’m fine.” He’d been around Kiriana majority of the time and hadn’t contracted anything at all. “If it passed that way there’s no doubt I would have come down with something by now.” He had only had a minor headache, but that had been even before he had been around Kiriana or the others when they were so ill. The information may not lead to much more in general, but putting it out there couldn’t hurt.

Hearing Element say that no one else, to the Shadower’s knowledge, was cure searching quite so vigorously was disheartening but not at all surprising. The Valley was so peaceful and plentiful that most of its residents could do absolutely nothing and suffer no consequences — elsewhere, wolves were constantly fighting for their lives, their ranks, their everything. Difficulty bred character; here, the lifestyle bred laziness. Even in times of crisis.
Of course, that was only applicable to those who had no excuse — the caretakers, those who were actually caretaking and hadn’t just adopted the title because it seemed an easy way out of doing anything, and the ill, all had reason not to be scouring the Salvajes — most, however, had no excuse for their laziness and no will to do anything but sit and hope someone else solved the problem for them.
Nor am I, an expert, that was, even with all that he had been taught as a puppy. There were so many plants that his knowledge barely scratched the surface. Until Element began to lead towards a water source, Sin said nothing else; he nodded at the resident’s invitation and hopeful gestures, that maybe something could still be found on Mount Shadow, that the visiting Novan was welcome to look…
Lingering behind the Zeta a step or two, towards the spring he followed, listening curiously to what Element had to offer about his experience with the illness. Indeed, it apparently was not transmittable by anything but the water — which was quite odd, he thought, but then he knew little about how diseases worked. Besides, hadn’t Nymphe said humans could do anything? If they had started this sickness, who knew what mysterious properties it had…
Right, he agreed with a sigh. Somehow, knowing what it wasn’t and what it didn’t do was… not giving Sinistra the feeling that anyone was narrowing in on a solution. I think it can only be caught from the water, the Alpha added — that had been his conclusion from the beginning. And then only the water down in the Vally. My Advisor thinks it has to do with humans. Do you know anything about them?

Love the new avatar. The little quotes great.
in this lifetime it better be the right time the first time might be your last time
Dark ears flickered and his brow furrowed as the word ‘humans’ came to his hearing. Humans did this to the water? How?
“Who’s your advisor, if I may ask?”
A question of common curiosity, nothing more or nothing less. After he asked he went to thinking about Sinistra’s own question, going over little facts and details he had acquired about these humans.
“Well,”
Element started. “I haven’t had any experience with them at all, but when I first came here a friend told me a lot about what she knew of them. She’d seen them and been…”
She’d been captured by them, right?
“Been captured before.” He seemed to consider the thought momentarily, then gave a little shake of his head and continued.
“She told me humans alone are harmless, but they have weapons. She called them devastating. Quick to kill.” He paused again, searching his thoughts for the name Illira had told him.
“Guns – that’s what she called them.”
He remembered other parts of their conversation that day, how amazed he had been that he didn’t even know these creatures existed, but Illira on the other hand had known them all too well. It was a shame he hadn’t seen her around for such a long time; his friend seemed to have faded out of the picture like one of many pack mates who stuck around a while then took their time to leave soon after. Sighing, he kept moving, leading Sinistra to the spring.
“Just a minute up ahead.” But none of that human information seemed to play in at all with the sickness. He didn’t see what it was they could have done, but who knew… he wasn’t a human expert either.
“I wonder what they could be doing to the water…” he mused as he moved along.
“And, the thing that’s been troubling me too, when there is a cure,” he stuck to using the word ‘when’ instead of ‘if’
“What do we do about the water? If it’s these humans, who says they won’t stop doing what their doing now. If it’s something else, how do we make it go away?” This had been what was resting on the Zeta’s mind the last couple of days, and it hadn’t brought him any comfort yet. Now this new addition with the humans possibly playing a part in it all brought a new edge to his discomfort.
Curving around a bend of jagged rock wall, they finally came to the spring. Stopping, Element gestured with a bob of his head.
“And there you go.” Maybe he’d take a nice long drink while he was here too.
“I’d offer you something to eat, but I don’t have anything fresh here.” He’d been busy hunting for Kiriana and Akeboshi, and the last fresh meat he’d had had gone to them earlier in the day.
“I don’t hunt much in the lowlands at this point, I’ve seen too many sick or dead prey around. I’m not sure if the illness would spread through them.” He looked a bit put out he couldn’t offer better assistance to the visiting Nova wolf, but clean water and a bit of information was all he could give right now.

Yay for Karm’s graphics. :)
Nymphe — you might not know her, she’s relatively new. A reply came automatically as he followed along, doing for once more listening than talking. Thus was an artifact of exhaustion, besides, there was little for him to offer at the moment outside of stories of how disappointing the search had been. Likely Element already realized that, to keep hammering on the point would be both redundant and depressing all around. Yes, better to shut up and take in information — sometimes the seemingly most insignificant of details were the key to all the answers.
Hmm. Captured by humans… sounded awful, probably was. I’d sooner die of my own paw, Sinistra thought defiantly, shaking off the horrific idea of it as the Zeta promised they were nearing refreshment. The impression that alone humans were harmless was not the one he had received from Nymphe, nor the one he was getting now, in fact. These “guns” weren’t any natural resource the Alpha had ever heard of — unless they fell from the sky, humans alone had created them. Humans were magical like that. They could make useful things out of nothing…
Guns, hmm… the visitor repeated to himself softly, but said nothing more. What did they do? Could they poison the water? Just as soon as the question popped into mind the tour guide answered it indirectly: presumably if it followed that guns poisoned water, Element would have said, “maybe that’s what’s going on!” not “I wonder…” then, maybe the other didn’t know what guns were either. Except things for killing. How pleasant.
Regretfully, as the scent of fresh water began to pepper the air, Sinistra answered, I don’t know. Nymphe and he had discussed just that in their last meeting — finding a cure was great, but what if this just kept happening? Would there be enough cure to last forever? Did it make sense to stay somewhere just to repeat the vicious cycle of falling ill, taking some magic plant and falling ill all over again from exposure to the same damn thing? No, that was nonsense. If there was something wrong with the water and it didn’t pass, they would all have to leave. He would leave, and had told his Advisor as much.
Thanks, as they reached the water’s edge Sin spoke again, a distant smile appearing for once. Listening keenly to the other’s explanation about a sort of food shortage — which Nymphe had also mentioned the prospect of — the visiting Alpha took a long, refreshing drink of the water. Hopefully it wasn’t infected, but Element had said he hadn’t fallen ill yet… besides, surely someone would realize by then if it was coming from Mount Shadow. Safe, indeed.
Not sure about that either… but if you can’t catch it from a wolf, how could you catch it from another animal? Didn’t make sense, did it? Still… better to be safe. Have you spoken with your Alpha about what’s happening? He had never met Oni and knew nothing about her, but was curious nonetheless. Would the other packs decide to depart if no solution was found?

So Nymphe was the Advisor, huh? A smile trickled across his dark features, and he let out a light
“Ah.”
Yes, he’d met Nymphe. A few times, actually.
“Yes, she’s a friend of mine.”
The two had gotten along well, and the friendship had sparked easily. She seemed to be a great choice for an Advisor, but Element kept the comment to himself. He didn’t want to make it seem like he was judging Sinistra’s actions in any way.
Lowering his haunches and taking a seat while his guest quenched his thirst, Element let his eyes wander upward to the sky. As always, the stars dotted the dark canvas and twinkled down, peacefully unaware of the drama unfolding here on earth in the Salvajes.
“No problem,”
he replied to the thanks. He knew the water was clean, for it was the source he’d been drinking from the past few days as well. One of a handful of springs located on the mountain.
With a thoughtful expression, he took a look at the plants growing in the moist earth around the water source, wondering if right before their eyes one of the bits of foliage could hold the cure to this epidemic. After Sinistra finished, Element shrugged in response.
“Not sure, but I don’t want to take the chance. Maybe getting the meat in your system could get you ill.”
No… he didn’t feel like being a lab rat and experimenting the idea with himself. Then the question shifted to Oni.
“No…”
He admitted, almost sheepishly.
“Actually… I haven’t really seen her around lately.”
Oni never had been the type of alpha he suspected was out clear in the open all the time… but he knew she had a watchful eye and knew what was going on around the mountain nonetheless. But he really hadn’t seen or heard from her since this started. Frowning at the thought, Element shook his head.
“I’ve only talked with her once… but that, well, wasn’t the best of occasions. I was telling her about the flood.”
From what Element had heard he didn’t think Sinistra had still been around at that point, so he cast the Alpha a glance to see if the information came clearly. He did know about the flooding already, didn’t he? “I’m not sure if anyone’s gotten to talk to her about it. I figure the leaders probably have.” He could only hope at least.

Regarding Element thoughtfully after another long thirst-quenching session with the river, Sinistra turned from the cool brook’s edge and likewise sat underneath the stars. No news on Oni’s opinion on the matter, was it? Well, Zeta was a respectable rank but not a leader — and it sounded that the two were not the best of friends anyway. As curious as he was about the Mount’s Alpha now — who she was, what she was like, moreover what she thought of all this — wiser he figured to leave it be.
That would have left them in an awkward, uncomfortable silence, but something else caught his attention: flood? The Gold Moon Forest one? Sin knew it had happened and that somewhere in the midst of all this, the pack had relocated to his back yard, Midas and Rayen had fallen off the face of the earth and the entire foret once ruled by his not-so-dear cousin was pretty much a disaster zone of fallen trees and dried mud.
Flood? He repeated curiously, facial features expressing the same sentiment. You mean in Gold Moon? I wasn’t here. When did it happen? Hmm. Flood. Excess water from Morning Glory Cascades. Disease. Tainted water in Morning Glory Cascades. What if something in the Forest had polluted their river? Maybe the timeline didn’t make sense, but now that Element had brought the disaster to attention, well, it was worth following up on.
At this point, any theory was a good theory. Unless it was… not.

He nodded again, keeping his eyes on Sinistra as he spoke.
“Yeah, in Gold Moon Forest. It was a couple of months ago now…”
What month exactly?
“Around early April, I think. I may be a bit off on the date; time wasn’t quite the most important thing going on at that point.”
His expression changed slightly, a thoughtful look coming to him.
“I got to be one of the lucky visitors at the time that got caught up in it…”
he added, this time a harsher edge to the young male’s voice. Clearly it wasn’t a pleasant series of memories.
“I was there with a friend, helping him make his den – he was injured, couldn’t do it on his own. Perfect timing had me there when the storm started and when the water finally came.”
Another brief moment of silence as he reviewed the series of thoughts.
All the ‘what ifs’ of the matter still tended to bother him. What if he hadn’t been there when the waters came? Dathan hadn’t been able to swim, so surely… surely he wouldn’t be where he was today. What if Indris hadn’t come by and found both Dathan and Element afterward, what then? Biting his lip absently, Element diverted his gaze again, looking at the water of the spring.
“It was awful really. The whole thing. And I don’t know much of the details about the things going on within the pack, but from what I heard their two Alpha’s left, leaving their pups behind. That’s when the pack moved to Strawberry Fields.”
He couldn’t remember the named of the Gold Moon Forest Alphas, never having met them.
“At least most everyone came out okay though. With something like that’s the most you can hope for, I guess.”
And the same goes for something like what were dealing with too…

Hmm… April. Must have been just after they had departed. Sinistra vaguely remembered running into a hellish storm not long into their journey, perhaps that had been one and the same as wiped out the Forest pack’s homeland. Although Element’s story was regretable yet interesting, it was also all very disappointing — because a rainstorm in the beginning of spring had clearly not caused problems in the beginning of summer. No, the timeline didn’t make sense. And his hope that maybe they had uncovered an explanation was dashed.
Hearing that Rayen and Midas had left was no news to the Novan, who knew they were gone. However, what was shocking was that they had left behind their puppies: that Sin had not realized. Nor did he know that they had left at such a time of crisis. Odd, the black Alpha thought. Granted, he had left his own pack, so he could hardly talk. But he hadn’t left any children behind to fend for himselves, or high-tailed it when things were looking especially bleak. And he would never have suspected Rayen or Midas for the type.
Guess you never really know anyone. The thought inspired a brief frown. It was true for others as well as the ex-Forest leaders. True, Sinistra agreed, that was the best anyone could hope for. Sad, though. I knew Rayen and Midas — not well, but Rayen was friends with a cousin of mine, Ravn, who had been leader of Gold Moon herself at one point. He didn’t know for how long the Zeta had lived in the Valley, so didn’t know if the other knew the Coyote Expedition story or not. The visitor hardly knew it himself.

He sensed the end of that story didn’t end quite happily, and the Zeta considered for a moment whether he should question what had happened or not. He was curious about the history of the Salvajes, having only been here since some time around the end of the winter season. He remembered the time well enough because it had been roughly a few days after his first birthday. Finding a home had been the best gift the young wolf had ever imagined. Traveling through the winter alone had left him weary and disheartened, but from the moment he’d been accepted into the back by Cypress everything had seemed to brighten. Now he was here and here to stay. That was probably one of the other reasons the illness sent a tremble through him; the thought of loosing what he’d gained here. Not just rank in the pack, but his friends and his home. He wasn’t a fool; he knew that if things didn’t get better many probably would not stick around.
Instead of asking directly for fear of being rude or bringing up memories the dark Alpha may have found painful, Element deterred to the familiar method of beating around the bush.
“I never met Midas and Rayen,”
he began.
“And I only came here late winter, so anything that happened in the valley before that’s a mystery to me. I’ve never heard the name Ravn though.” Considering again, he shook his head and added:
"Actually, I dont know much about the valley at all except for whats happened while I was here."
In fact, he didn’t know much of the history about his own pack either. He had heard that besides the disappearance of Cypress, the Mount had been cursed in a way with many a disappearing alpha. He decided to bring that matter up too.
“Though I’ve heard from a few that Cypress leaving Mount Shadow here wasn’t the first time the pack’s had an alpha that seemed to disappear.”

Sinistra, conversely, knew quite a bit of the Valley’s history — spare for the few years between the time the DarkMoon pack had met its devastating end and the time he had officially returned, first as a lone wolf, then as the claimant of Nova Mountain. But he did have a fairly good idea of what had occurred in the Salvajes since wolves had returned, thanks to knowing the Forest’s founder — Ravn — even though he had not spoken to her. The black wolf had arrived just prior to the Coyote Expedition; he had founded the Mountain pack immediately after it, witha n Expedition veteran at his side. In fact, it had been Ravn’s Beta who had become his own… an odd, ironic, and highly dramatic twist.
Not to mention extremely confusing.
I don’t know much about this pack, Sin admitted with a shrug. It seemed their conversation had drifted away from the immediate difficulties they were facing, which was really quite fine with him. A brief diversion would probably be good, at least for the traveling Alpha, after days and days of trying and failing to find a cure. Indeed, after days and days of caring for his sickly mate, Element probably felt much the same. I did meet Cypress before he left. I helped him name is pet kestrel. The memory inspired a smile; the visitor wondered where Tom’s owner had gotten off to. But Rayen, she was one of the first wolves I met when I returned to the Salvajes back in the beginning of winter. We weren’t fast friends, he said with a chuckle that gave way to a sly grin. Oh well. And I met Midas briefly — same with the two Creek Alphas, but he was only Beta at the time. Or Delta, or something. To be honest, more memories, I couldn’t have cared any less about him. Never met your new Alpha though, or this Fields leader.. do you know her?

Indeed, Element did feel much the same about the appreciation of the topic shift. If he managed to venture away from the Mount and his mate, he tended to run into someone along the way, and the largest degree of the following conversations had been about the illness. A different turn on the split road seemed much easier and less stressful to follow.
“Really,”
he stated, a curious brow lifting. It wasn’t so much a question as a repeated expression.
“Can’t say I’ve heard of anyone having a pet kestrel before.”
The concept itself was an interesting idea though.
“I don’t remember seeing it when I was accepted,”
he added, flickering back to his memory of the occasion. No, no birds stuck out in his memory.
“What was his name?” No doubt that must have been an interesting day for the inky male before him.
The Fields leader… that was Quicksilver. He gave a swift nod, opening his mouth to speak.
“She was one of the first wolves I met when I came to the Valley. Not alpha at the time… but I don’t remember any rank in particular.”
A grin replaced the easy smile on his maw. “She was fun to be around; good sense of humor.”
He supposed things had changed a bit now with her new rank and new responsibility.
“I saw her a short while back, actually. Her and Green – not sure if you’ve met him, but he’s Delta of the Fields. They just had a litter of puppies.”
His tail gave a few delicate swishes behind him as he thought of the three young pups.
“This was right as the news of the sickness as coming around, and probably around the time the first few wolves were getting ill.”
There was a slightly more concerned look on his face now, but he sighed and continued.
“I can only hope their doing well. Seemed okay then.”

Peeping Tom, Sinistra smoothly rejoined, nodding to confirm. He fondly remembered how he had been introduced to the rather noisy little bird — hence the origin of the creature’s name — and he had been rather nosy, at that, giving away the mountain Alpha’s presence to his fellow mountain Alpha, who had been sleeping soundly in the murky swamp erstwhile.
Element enjoyed his own memories it seemed, of Quicksilver. It stuck out, he thought, that the Zeta said she “was” fn to be around, as if she was no longer enjoyable company — perhaps power and/or the strain of leadership had changed her, the black visitor mused. It had been difficult for him to adjust to initially, and only after a couple of months “vacation” had Sin truly been prepared to step into the position. And even still, there were moments.
That seems to happen a lot there, the Alpha continued to muse aloud, smiling good-naturedly: there were an awful lot of birthings going on in the pack. Well, two, but still. More than any other pack could claim (or so he believed, unless he had missed something in his hiatus). Hopefully they are. I’ve never met Green, either, but… bad time for puppies… He said generally, not meaning to imply that they ought to have known better than to have children during some odd plague — surely this disease had been the furthest thing from their minds then, as it had been the furthest from anyone else’s until just recently. I’ll be heading there eventually — I’ll let them know you’re concerned, Sinistra then offered, gazing from his tour guide back to the moonlit brook. And then I’ll be off to Silver Creek, he said with a sigh. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. Time fixed every thing, after all. Who else have you seen cure-searching? Anyone? Maybe they could share resources, if Element knew of some other journeying medics-in-waiting.

A smile laced his features at the name, one brow raising.
“Unique, I have to say.”
Yes, there was probably a story behind that, but it wasn’t his business to jump in and delve deeper into someone else’s words if there was no invitation. He wasn’t one to pry.
The Zeta wouldn’t really know about the stresses of leadership roles, especially not anything close to the responsibilities of an alpha. He’d been the pack Epsilon for a fair amount of time, but he was proud of his position now too. His first held rank had been that of Theta, and the ebony male remembered how amazed he’d been at the jump (and at the thought that he’d actually earned such a thing). Mount Shadow was his first true pack, and everything he’d learned about pack life he had picked up while he was here in the Salvajes. Instinct helped too, of course.
He chuckled at Sinistra’s comment. Mount Shadow’s pups consisted only of those who had entered the pack on their own; not offspring of any pack mates. A more knowing smile replaced his previous one – come next season it seemed that wouldn’t be the case anymore. It was something the young male had thought about and talked over with his mate, and the two of them wanted the same thing. But that was a bit far off in the future still, and he returned his present mind to the conversation at hand.
“Yeah… it’s really too bad. I think they’d know better now than to expose the pups though, as long as their being watched.”
If the disease was only contracted from the water, then the pups would probably remain healthy. Hopefully, at least.
“Thanks,”
he replied to his companion’s next offer.
“I appreciate that.”
He may not be the pair’s best friend, but friends were friends nonetheless. Element’s gray eyed gaze seemed to follow Sinistra’s to the brook, watching as the rippling water reflected the shine of the moon. From the reflection his gaze slipped to the moon itself.
“Waxing Gibbous,”
he mouthed quietly, hardly realizing he had spoken. Blinking, he shook his gaze and returned it to Sinistra.
“Phase, I mean. I’m the pack Skywatcher.”
Some thought of it as a rather silly job, but Element enjoyed it. That’s what mattered to him.
“As for cure searching… I’ve seen plenty of wolves out and about information sharing and searching, but I haven’t come across any medics. I haven’t been out as much as most though,”
he said. Hopefully there were some others out there doing just the same as Sinistra.

Sorry for the delay. I’m going to wrap this up… you can reply again if you want, but I don’t think it’s necessary unless you want to..:)
Towards the moon his head tilted as Element spoke of it — as most wolves did, the Novan knew of the moon phases and their general significance to those on the ground, but he did not know the names of the intricate phases, spare for the obvious four or so with which only one who was entirely oblivious to the world around them would be unfamiliar — full, new, and so on. You should speak to Starchaser, in Silver Creek, if you don’t know him already, the Alpha offered in reply, eyes still fixed upon the lit satellite, He was a Skywatcher for Nova Mountain for a while, and admittedly, Sinistra had no idea if the fellow held the same co-rank in his new pack, but he imagined that the hybrid had all the same knowledge regardless of its official uses (or lack thereof) to the Creek.
As he suspected, Element confirmed: there were few out cure-searching. Few enough, at any rate, not to be noticeable. It stood to reason that if a great many were cure-searching, most would know about it, if only because they wouldn’t be able to help but come across one or two, at least. This made the issue seem all the more urgent, and it reminded the visitor that he ought to get back to work and do what he had come here to do: cure search. Returning his gaze to regard the Zeta with a distant, distracted smile, the Novan shrugged lightly and sighed just the same. I should get back on task, then, he said. And you probably ought to get back to your mate, this, he thought, was a good way to relieve the resident of feeling compelled to stay with his guest: Sinistra could figure out his way around well enough without a tour guide, as Element certainly had better places to be. Besides, the Alpha thought he would have a better time concentrating if alone. Thanks for your help, the wolf finished with a nod, turning back to the brook for another drink of the refreshing liquid before starting to set off into the night to scour the mountainsides of the del Nortes… |
