OUT OF CHARACTER
Chogan. X) IN CHARACTER
The young girl thought it amazingly fortunate she had stumbled across a trail headed for her destination: water. So many other creatures walked this very same path that Basenji couldn't help but slow down to uncover every last trace of odor as she made her way through the casually winding artery of the forest. The subordinate didn't know that Wild Fire Forest was full of these little travel veins. They were as effective as highways in the human world, but none of the animals had roaring engines or pollution exitting via rear end pipes ...or, maybe they did. As she sifted through the particles in the atmosphere with a quivering, black nose she kept picking up a very faint scent of something wrong. Unfortunately for her, the evidence of it was so feeble that it held no more than a passing fancy for a pup who had other things on her mind, like getting a drink. Reaching the shore of the river was taking longer than expected so she picked up the pace in hopes of quenching her thirst very soon. Basenji left all the smells alone and stood upright as she trotted briskly Northbound. It was such a nice stroll through the trees that she pondered, What could go wrong? The birds answered her with upbeat twills and chirps and all of the young wolf's worries melted with these beautiful songs. Finally, the sparkling water was in sight and she broke into a gallop- Basenji was making a beeline for it, and as far as she was concerned nothing could stop her- Not in a millions years!

Yay!
Except, that is, for a manic youngster hell-bent on preventing all and any mammalian snout from as much as glancing the surface of the deceptively sparkling waters. He appeared out of nowhere, a blur of tiramisu tints flying through the air to the melodious tune of a desperate ”NOOOOO!” He impacted with Basenji’s side just before she as she stooped to take her fill, knocking them both into a wild tangle of weeds further inland. ”Poisonous!” he hollered as they flew, wide-eyed with horror that there still existed wolves in the valley who hadn’t received the memo. They came to a shuddering halt, disturbing a few birds who’d been nesting nearby. The disgruntled aviators burst into the air, screeching Bloody Mary as they went.
”I-I’m sorries, but…” the young attacker stammered, untangling himself from grass and limbs that weren’t his own, scuttling back from the tackled newcomer and placing himself between her and the softly purling waters. Both ears swivelled this way an that, quivering at the slightest trace of a sound – like rusty, awfully outdated spy-equipment. ”There’s…bad stuff in’er,” he continued, anxiety rising in his golden eyes the longer his awkward monologue continued. Looking rather sheepish, he added: ”…and…er. I’m Chogan?”

OUT OF CHARACTERYaay, Basenji wants to be hard headed! :x Sorry for the shortness. IN CHARACTER
The rush of wind passing through her upright ears nearly prevented the screech of a youthful voice reaching them. There was no time to react anyway, and before she knew what happened the sky was the ground and up was down and right was left and, woah. Actions obviously spoke much louder than words. When both of them 'safely' landed Basenji shuddered and jumped up, eyeing the soul whom cost her balance and a drink. His choppy sentences confused her. Bad stuff? This kids crazy. As cute as boys were, they could be damn immature. "It's nice that you want me to join in your game, but I'm thirsty and I came all this way for a drink. Don't expect a stinky boy joke to stop Basenji!"If she were a little human girl she would've been haughtily wiping dust from her jeans, but wolves didn't wear clothes. The Silver Creek resident made her way passed Chogan, but stopped mid-way between boy and river. It was rude to blow him off like that, so she turned back and smiled, "How about we play after? Hold on a sec." Excited by the prospect of a playmate, she hurried to the water's edge.

This is fun already xD
Excuse me? So utterly flabbergasted was Chogan by this response that he only managed a sputtering, entirely unintelligible retort – she actually thought this was a JOKE? Before he had a chance to explain, the persistent lass was off again, drawn to the microbe-infested waters like iron filings to North. The half-Mexican stumbled after her, not really believing that she would drink after someone had gone to the trouble of rugby tackling her to make sure she didn’t fall victim to the water-borne lunacy that was ravaging so many.
”I MEAN IT!” he shouted, realizing too late that his muzzle had been but an inch from her ear – an incoherent gargle followed, out of which a seasoned expert might’ve been able to extract a hurried apology. ”IS poisoned,” the Strawberry whined, bending his forelegs so that he might put his head in Basenji’s way, fluffy rump in the air, staring up at the ‘non-believer’ with pleading, tearful – just for effect, honestly – eyes. ”I show you ni-sane and dead things, if y’want, but is true, I swears. Don’t drink?”

IN CHARACTER
Basenji cringed when he yelled point blank in her ear. Finally, she wisened up to her own ignorance and figured there had to be an ounce of truth in such desperate attempts. Now that she listened it sounded quite terrible. Insane and dead things? What kind of river was this? Oh... She faintly remembered Chogan speaking about poison when he collided with her and then just now saying it again. Basenji inhaled loudly and spoke, "Well, okay. Is that why you're down here ...to protect the unknowing?" She had to know, then maybe she could help him out. After all, she owed him something for 1. not believing him at first and 2. being saved. These conditions would only exist if indeed Morning Glory Cascades turned all whose lips touched it sick, or worse, dead. When Basenji had calmed down from previous events, she realized something quite horrifying. "Chogan!" The she-wolf gulped and her body tensed, "I... I drank the water downstream from here." Big, green eyes filled with newfound dread, "I'll be okay, I will, won't I? Right?" She was now the desperate one.

Unknowing? Chogan frowned up at her, but let the peculiar word pass him by. He recognized ‘protect’, and yes, that had become his sole purpose of late – keeping anyone and anything as far away from the water as possible whilst also trying to find a cure for whatever had turned a once refreshing source of water utterly undrinkable. It was hard work, but some sort of a routine was starting to emerge from his day-to-day frenzies – the only way to accomplish everything that needed to be done in the space of twenty-four hours and get a few hours of sleep.
Safe in the knowledge that another wolf had been warned, he extracted his head from between the treacherous waters and her intensely green stare, about to recount the tale of how this unknown pollutant had come to affect the valley when she spoke again, this time with a note of panic rising in her voice. Chogan froze. She’d drank the water.
”I…” he stammered, making plate eyes at her and taking a cautionary step backwards. ”… I d’n…d’no..I…how much?”

OUT OF CHARACTER
Bwaa, new set. The first paragraph makes no sense! I'm in a make no sense mood is all. :D
IN CHARACTER
She hated to worry, she hated that feeling right in her stomach and chest and legs. It was warm, like waking up and realizing you just peed in your friend's bed at a sleepover. It made her tremble as if someone was balling all her muscles up and getting ready to toss them over a bridge into the sea as she watched helplessly (because c'mon, wouldn't you be all shaky and scared and, well, jelly-like too if someone did that?). Chogan's response didn't help at all and she bit her lip anxiously. He stopped back and so did Basenji as she tried to escape her own skin. "I drank some." What a lie! She was too scared to tell him how much, but finally after a few seconds of very delicate silence she bursted out, "Okay, I drank lots! ...a bellyful." A very intense frown scraped across her face like a toothy wound and she sighed harder than ever before. "B-but, I feel fine. I feel fine, really Chogan. Really, really fine. So so so fine. I'm okay!" The desperation welled up in her voice until she thought she was going to wail with self-pity, but after the 'okay' it became deadly silent. She laid down and buried her head between both paws like a mourning soul at a funeral. Why didn't Jake say anything? Was he aware of the danger? What if... oh god! The possibilities were just too horrendous to bare. Basenji realized that Chogan was probably feeling very uncomfortable right about now. Maybe he thought she was crazy by now, too. The she-pup lifted her head up "I'm sorry, first I think you're lying and then I act all weird in front of you. I'm just a little terror fied." It was pronounced 'terrified' but nonetheless true. A thought fueled by newfound paranoia burst into her mind and she watched Chogan with uncertainty brimming in her eyes, "We better get as far away from this water as possible. We could fall in or the bad spirits could try to shove us over the edge." It sounded like something a semi-delusional wolf would say, but Basenji was just feeling hysterical from the uneasy emotions that Chogan's words brung.

Sorry for the delay!
”I...” Chogan stuttered, but didn't mange anything else. He desperately wanted to reassure her, tell her that the exact amount she drank wasn't enough to trigger the sickness, but it wasn't true. From what he could tell, even the smallest drop transform a once sane wolf into a loopy psychopath. With this in mind, he backed away, trying to keep his movements as subtle and natural as possible. It wasn't her fault she hadn't been warned him time. If anything, it was his.
”Everyone's searchin' for'a cure,” he told her, only to be interrupted by a ludicrous theory involving spirits and being shoved into the water unless they got the hell away from it. The Strawberry youth blinked once, then twice, regarding the already delirious (from fear, but he wasn't to know that) Creeker with utmost caution. ”...no, is only if you drink it...” he clarified, paused to let it sink in and went on, ”You drank, so...so you might ge'sick. Everyone's searchin' for a cure, though, so denna worry too much. Y'got someones to take care of yous?”
It was like telling someone they had terminal cancer.
