This is open to all and any Strawberry Field wolves who wish to be informed about the cure and where to find it. =) Anyone who doesn't join in can just assume they found out about the cure from someone in their pack. Similar threads will be up in the other pack lands ASAP.
There was enough of the reed dispersed throughout the piles around The Farm to cure Strawberry Fields twice over, but Chogan decided to discard the less appealing specimens and had gathered the newer ones in a pile. Fei had already disappeared off to fetch a fresh batch, after which she would head to Mount Shadow and Silver Creek to let the wolves there know and offer the cure she brought along to those who needed it the most. Chogan, meanwhile, would deal with his own pack and Nova Mountain. His mind went briefly to Arsenio, and he wondered if the delusional whelp would resent him for failing to share the news with him before announcing it to the valley. He hoped not, and didn't think it would be fair if it were the case – this needed to get into circulation as fast as possible and the Phase child probably wouldn't believe him anyway. His hallucinations had him thinking the cure had been found days before.
He dragged the pile of long, razor-edged reeds to the pack's rendezvous point, cursing and spluttering when they cut into his lip or the froth began to dribble down his chest. Had he known about opposable thumbs and bi-pedal travel, he would've wished himself in possession and capable of both. It was a little past midday when he'd finally arranged the cure into a small pile on an outcropping of rock that rose above the field, seating himself next to the precious cargo just in case a mischievous breeze decided it might be fun to play catch. He cleared his throat, straightened his back, and tilted his head back to free a long, sonorous howl from the depth of his being. It was time to put an end to this godforsaken plague.

Vrash

Vrash as of late had been skulking along the borders like some disreputable intruder. Even though he was of Strawberry Fields, he didn't live there. Eventually this knowledge would be conveyed to Quicksilver by means of his lover, Indris, but Vrash didn't know Indris even knew yet. All he wanted to do was make sure that Indris was healing well, both from the sickness and heartbreak. When he heard a howl pulsate through the air, Vrash lifted his head violently upward. The motion was jarring and left remnants of a headache chasing down his thick neck and charging against his temples. A soft grunt meandered from his throat as he began to trot towards the sound, dodging and weaving through the terraces of foliage and strawberry-meshed underbrush.
It didn't take long for him to come across Chogan. Vrash knew him and acknowledged him by waving his tail and provided him with an expression of subdued shock. Although he was the Alpha pup, he was still just that, a pup. Vrash's eyes flickered across the froth-covered mouth and mound of prickly, saliva-coated substance atop an unidentifiable rock. Cocking his head, Vrash eyed him curiously, You look pretty determined. The statement sounded stupid in his own ears and it wasn't meant to be witty at all. Scoffing at himself, Vrash sat nearby.
He felt comfortable with Chogan. Unlike with most other pack animals, especially in Strawberry Fields, Vrash didn't feel guilty or weighed down by anything when he was with the elder youth. With intrigue written across every contour of his broad, Russo-German face, Vrash engaged the pup eagerly. He didn't consider that this sitting on the rock was the cure; in fact, he had no idea whatsoever why Chogan would call the wolves to attention: 'which was why Vrash sat there impatiently now.
O, that forced thunder from his heart did fly, O, that sad breath his spongy lungs bestow'd... Would yet again betray the fore-betray'd, And new pervert a reconciled maid! |

News of a cure had traveled quickly through the grapevine; rumors sputtering weakly in the driving wind, bringing a small flash of hope to the infected wolves of the valley. As soon as Chogan’s own sonorous voice reached velveteen ears, the Alpha, nervously pacing near the boarders of her packlands, immediately began to think of Kenzoku. A wolfish blush caused the female to duck her head; the hallucinations and insanity brought upon the older pup had caused her to fall into a sickness-induced love with her Alpha. Had the situation not been so dire, it might have actually been funny. Despite it all, she was still worried about Kenzie and a bit doubtful of the cure. Would it work? She had seen no solid evidence of its power, but figured she would have to trust the pups that discovered it.
Quicksilver had not gotten sick; she had spent most of the plague-season underground, nursing a swollen belly—and shortly thereafter—puppies. By the time the pups were old enough to escape the den, the plague had already been washed down the rivers—its remnants remaining only in the unfortunate wolves struck by it. She had stumbled across Kenzoku; sick and driven insane. Likewise, she had noted the sickness in Deception and a few of the wolves who had come to visit her on the eve of the birthing. As she turned her paws in the direction of Chogan’s voice, the Strawberry fervently hoped that this was it—the cure. She wanted her pack back; she wanted them healthy.
Swift, long legs brought her quickly to the meeting place, but hesitated as soon as she entered within range. Before her, she saw the rangy, painfully familiar form of Chogan; nearby, she could spot Vrash—a wolf she had invited across the boarders just before becoming holed up in her den, but had not yet formally met. She hovered just outside of their vision, watching Chogan as he arranged a strange variety of weed that she assumed to be the cure. She felt cowardly, but could not resist her hesitation; she had not spoken to the Saqui-Citlali boy since their last pack meeting on Gold Moon—right before the flood, when she announced that his father and mother were both gone. She had wanted to give both boys their space; from them, she could sense a distrust and dislike directed at her—moreso from Taigi than Chogan. Nevertheless; it was there.
Despite everything, she still loved the boys dearly and felt her heart well up with pride as she watched Chogan taking charge. Midas and Rayen would be proud—wherever they were.
Throwing aside her anxiety, the Strawberry Alpha threw up her tail, rolled back her shoulders, and strode confidently into the meeting place, cobalt eyes trained curiously on the mysterious weed by the boy’s large paws.
“Chogan…thank you…you and all the pups…for finding this.”
She dipped her head to the older pup in a show of appreciation and respect, and then moved over towards the sidelines. She wasn’t going to leave; she wanted to make sure the cure was administered to each and every sick wolf in her pack. They were all going to survive—everyone was going to be alright. |

Dathan stumbled along the small path near his den. Every inch of his body, every muscle, every joint, felt cold and numb from both the lack of sleep and the sickness. He tried desperately to get his paws to move in a straight line, but failed miserably and went wobbling back and forth, stumbling over rocks and twigs and other things. He cursed mentally at the walk way, which in his eyes squiggled around and around like a snake.
Suddenly, a voice pierced the air. The voice demanded a pack meeting, but it was definitely not 'Silver's. He shrugged it off, and decided to follow it anyways. He straightened his legs, and started at a slow jog, tripping and falling every which way he went. He'd get a good few cuts on the way to the meet...But at least he'd be there.
When he finally arrived at the meeting place, he saw very few wolves. He saw a newer wolf that he was yet to get acquainted with. He also saw Chogan and Quicksilver. So, Chogan was the one to call them all here...He wondered why, but not for long. In front of Chogan was a pile of ugly, foaming, saliva covered weeds. They sprang up, hissing at him, and he immediately snarled back.
He shook his head, trying to make them stop, and glanced quietly at Quicksilver. “...Morning, QuickSilver.” He bowed his head to her, then turned to Vrash. “My name is Dathan. It's nice to meet you.”
He then, and finally, turned his head to Chogan. “ Morning, Chogan....Hey...What's up with the plants? They seem sort of vicious, don't they?”

The endless days and nights with little sleep or rest had begun to wear out the normally energetic wolf. Kenzie hardly ever stopped and when she did, it was never for long. Radar hunted only when she had been safely tucked away. Even then, sometimes he lost track of her. More than once she had escaped from him and he had to frantically go looking for the ailing pup. Until a few days ago, she had gotten into so much mischief that Radar saw that she did not recognize her own limits. He was sure she would have jumped off a mountain and tried to fly if given the opportunity.
It was in those long days and nights that he had discovered a way to easily move her. Once she collapsed from either exhaustion or over heating in the sun, he would roll her onto a downed evergreen limb and drag her off to somewhere shady, cool, and safe. The discovery had come out of pure necessity. Since they were the same size and no doubt she was still growing, Radar could no longer lift her or carry her on his back without hurting her.
Rumors of a cure reached him and it gave his breaking heart something to hope for. Kenzie had taken another turn for the worse and the way she was going, Radar knew he would soon lose her. He had yet to find a meal she could hold down. Watching her slowly waste away tore at him and it was all he could do to keep smiling for her sake.
Cuddled around his sickly thin daughter, Radar groomed her gently and softly told her stories to help her not think about the illness and pain.
“… then you know it’s just going to be a light rain later on. But if the ants are walking all in a straight line, then they are not exploring and they are getting ready for a big storm. And just like you know it’ll be a nice day when the ant hills are open, you know it’s going to rain really soon if the aunt hills are closed. If it’s going to rain a lot, then the ant hills will be very thick and tall so water doesn’t wash down them. Same thing with mice, rabbit and…”
Radar’s ears perked up. A pup calling a gathering? That was unusual. It had to be something big for a pup to get away with it… Something big? Radar leapt up and strained his ears for more information but none came. Did he dare hope?
Radar gazed down to his daughter. He could not leave her. She was wasting away. If she died, he would not let her die alone. Nor would he leave her unprotected. There was no other way; they would have to go together. Tired and drained, he began dragging the branch he had rested her upon. Though they were soon on their way, it was painfully slow going but at least they were moving. More than once he had to stop to rest and he frequently tried new positions to try and pull more effectively.
"And you remember how to read the moose and deer to see what the weather's like? Kenzie? Kenzie hang in there sweetheart. Someone will find a cure for this thing. Niish is looking right now. Please Kenzie," he pleeded between pants on one of the breaks, "I'll teach you how to read the clouds when you're all better and the best times to hunt for mice.."
Radar had never felt so close to crying. He wanted to beg her to hold on but he did not want her to suffer any more. Swallowing hard, he resumed their long trek. By the time he finally saw the young howler, Radar was exhausted and ready to drop. Now where had Niish gotten off too? Radar had stuck with Kenzie but he suspected Niish had been ill as well. Since Kenzie was more of a danger to herself, Radar had not been able to follow Niish and try and help him as well.
Radar resumed tugging and dragging his charge once more. He had not recognized Chogan but was struck by how familiar the pup looked. Last Radar had seen of him was when the whelp had snuck out of the den one night. That had been a lifetime ago. Once they were close enough that Radar felt comfortable leaving her, he nuzzled, nudged, and lightly groomed Kenzie, murmuring that things would be okay and he would be very near. Dragging his paws, Radar limped quietly closer. To tired to say anything, he simply dipped his head low in greetings to them and waited quietly for the reason of the summons. Nervous about leaving Kenzuko, Radar kept glancing back to her. His tail had no wag left to it.

Awe! Radar, you make me wanna cry *sniffles*

Over the past month, Kenzoku's healthy went increasingly downhill. Much to her chagrin, her was one of the first creatures to be contaminated with the water-borne disease, but that wasn't the worst of her troubles. Pure happiness filtered through her system until the only think the little forty-nine pound wolf could feel was joy. Everything about her world brought pleasure to her thoughts and she danced upon it wistfully. During this time, the child took nothing and everything for granted. She appreciated the slightest change in color on a beetle, but became unable to recognize her own personal needs. Wants and desires were one thing, but the most basic and principle needs that every single living thing required to survive escaped her. Her form became numb to temperature, or maybe her thoughts just blocked out the dehydration, for whatever the reason the dear started to dash throughout the lands for longer periods of time each day, resting less and less. Water was another need that the child only took upon when it was directly in front of her, but she failed to realize the signals that told her drinking was of utmost importance.
At first, the dear appeared as nothing more then blissfully innocent to nature's cruelty, even though she had experienced a big blow to the heart, herself. She was a happy little sprite that could do no wrong or ever discover something that made a frown develop on her delicate features. All thoughts of her past traumas were gone, all tears she shed for the loss of Radar, her home, her old alphas and her first love- forgotten. Nothing plagued her thoughts but the hidden ailment that surged through her veins and milked blind cheer out of her at every corner. Things slowly began to change though, because with each passing day, her symptoms got a little worse. First came the dizzy spells, then the forgetfulness and the delirious expressions upon her form. Slowly, her mind eased out of the real world and slipped into the private realm of her own fantasies. There she danced upon the clouds with the cool, spring breeze caressing her scarlet fur and breaking at her face as she darted through it like a bat out of hell. Her paws sank into the soft, cotton texture and raced at a breakneck speed after some invisible prey, or maybe away from a playful pursuer. Hunger never clenched her stomach here, nor the dry, scratchiness of a parched throat and tired limbs. hot and cold mattered not, nor did night and day. It was simply enough for her to register others were around towards the end of it.
While her mind stole itself away and hid behind the protective barrier of a dreamlike state, the poor girl's form was left to weather the storm. Exhaustion filled every crevice of her being to the point where it pained her to walk at all. Her petite frame curled up in a tightly clenched ball upon a smooth, cool surface that she vaguely recognized as a large leaf. Despite the summer heat, everything about her twitched and convulsed with a foreign chill that gripped her to the bone. She shivered uncontrollably in response to the fever, large beads of sweat trickling from her matted fur at her ears and around her pink paws, though she hadn't the capability to truly sweat. Instead, air came to her lungs in rushed, ragged breaths. Each inhale came only a second or two after the previous one, giving her little time to exhale at all. Her tongue lolled out the side of her mouth, attempting to cool herself down even though her mind told her she was freezing and on the verge of hyperthermia. The pink appendage was dry along the tip and her nose wasn't looking much better. She hadn't licked it in hours because she was panting so hard. Blue-green eyes swelled with a distant haze, like the girl was in some foreign place and struggling to return to her body. Even as Radar curled around her side, she could barely make out his form through the fog.
All around her, detail escaped her knowledge and things blurred drastically out of focus. The only thing that keyed her into her caretaker was his distinct, pleading words and the soft, comforting caress of his tongue rolling along her pelt. A part of her knew he was upset and fretting, but she could not bring herself to calm his nerves. Words to tell him she was ok and she was listening were lost on a parched tongue, the stale taste in her mouth enough to make her gag. I... I'm here. She said, the tone coming out weak and shrouded in the delirium of her own world. It was sweet and almost sounded like "silly" should have been tacked onto it as the faint, shallow smile crossed her lips. Where do you think I'd be? Kenzoku questioned on, not realizing that the words never left her maw. Even in her pitiful state, her thoughts were covered in the mindless bliss that glistened through all by her lost eyes. A piece of her was aware of the pain and the throbbing in her chest that threatened to explode. This piece recognized the agonizing, blinding pain from her stomach that told her she hadn't eaten anything solid in days.
Suddenly, all of her wanted to cry out to express just how bad it hurt inside, but the only think that crossed her lips was a silent scream as she body twitched inwards on itself and started to vibrate. She made the now familiar motions and strangled noises, despite her best efforts to restrain them. The muscles in her pleading belly clenched tightly and then relaxed over and over again beyond Kenzie's control and forced her to double over, collapsing into a painful heap on the plant, not realizing when she attempted to stand. A moment or to later, something scorched her insides as a burning sensation spread throughout her throat and drew ever nearer to her maw. It felt like she was being poisoned, like her own body was trying to kill her and she wished beyond hope that it would just go away. The feeling was horrifying, being able to know what is going to happen, sense it coming on and having no strength left to fight it. She was disappointed in herself for not even struggling anymore when the bile throbbed past the back of her tongue and splurged across the grasses around her. Because her stomach was empty, she had nothing left to vomit but the very acid itself and it came out in a yellowy liquid that clung to the roof of her mouth and everywhere else for long, agonizing moments on end.
Instinctually, the yearling shook her head violently from side to side and clicked her tongue in a futile attempt to rid herself of the taste. The effort made her head scream until it fell effortlessly back upon the branch with a thwap, forcing everything else around her to surge in a crippling pain. The blood seemed to race away from her head and made her feel top heavy and lightheaded all at the same time. Little fuzzy blurs were spinning around her, marred by her already twisted vision and for a few moments, it became harder to breathe. If she had any energy left, the pathetic creature might have cried with desperation, anger, stress and fear... even from her senseless joy. Anything was better than this. She wanted to breakdown so bad inside, but she had no tears left to fall and no voice left to cry. At a disastrous pitfall in her little blip of an existence, Kenzie just let go, allowing herself to be at the mercy of the fates. She could hear the constant thrum of Radar's voice surround her as the ground bumped and turned beneath her, but clarity had since left the wolf long ago. Now sounds meant nothing more then noise to her aching head so badly that she longed for silence, yet a she still strained to hear the male's voice. As long as she heard him or felt him around her, she knew she was safe. As long as he was there, she was ok. She hoped.

Hey-o. =) And Arwen, I wasn't sure what to do about the Indy-Vrash timeline. I thought maybe that the cure would come before the confrontation, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Whatever. =) Let me know if I need to edit anything out of this post.

Chogan’s voice roused him from something akin to sleep and Indris struggled onto his paws and out of his den, moving out of necessity rather than purpose. Something was going on and, ruined or not, the Beta had enough sense left to realize that a pup calling a pack meant he’d had to show up, too. Vague relief swept over the blackened wolf as his legs performed their duties naturally, carrying him with none of the staggering twitchiness that had crippled him just before he’d imposed self-quarantine. From the young man’s perspective he had been cured for sometime, but recently his body had doubled over in chills and muscle aches, and he had suffered akin to Kenzoku: little he ate gave him nourishment, or stayed in his system for more than a few hours. These symptoms, which had been heaped upon him only within the last few days, disconcerted the male. He had been healthy! The unconscious side of his mind insisted that perhaps his recent heartbreak had given him cause for physical strife. Whatever the case, he was going.
And he had arrived. At first the ebony Fielder had eyes only for his adopted son and (on a somewhat lesser scale) the unappetizing reeds piled near his tawny form. Thoughtlessly Indris moved to nuzzle Taigi’s brother, wonderment glazing his features until a painfully familiar countenance came into focus. The Lonán wolf’s head pulled up sharply and a swift exhalation blasted from his nostrils. For a few calm seconds he regarded his lover, his betrayer, and the taste of ashes rose to cloy his throat. A shudder wracked his hackles, just barely detectable, though his move to hide it came too late. The last thing he wanted to do, surprisingly enough to some, was hurt Vrash. Something in the charcoaled man understood that the Russian Strawberry was here only to see that he was alright. He still cares about you… Indris caught a whine between his teeth and snapped the sound away with the thought, in time for his Alpha’s voice to distract him.
A last glance of wretched apology flew within the other male’s notice, and then Indy turned to his leader. Part of him ached to move toward her and offer deference, but the knowledge of his internal mistakes held back his impulses for another time. Instead he simply reined his ears back and stepped forward, acknowledging her presence through loyal sky-blue eyes that met with hers for but an instant. Her compassion toward Chogan and his discovery—a bolt of realization struck within the Beta then—was well-appreciated. A dry laugh, altogether humorless, escaped him as Dathan commented on the nature of the reeds lain before them. It withered and died upon exposure to the atmosphere, and an awkward cross between embarrassment and unhappiness settled into the male as his pallid pack-mate met with Vrash. How could he had made himself such a fool…?
Alarm registered in the youth’s gaze as Radar dragged himself—and his surrogate daughter—onto the scene. While he was now more than capable of recognizing that the ruddy girl had been sick all along, it still startled the Beta to see how worse her symptoms had become. She had taken quite a toll on her caretaker… Radar looked exhausted and at his wit’s end, thought Indy’s sympathy for the once-Jester turned to dread as Kenz collapsed across the reeds Chogan had brought in a fit of retching and painful heaves. He lifted one paw, transfixed and unsure how he could help to remedy the situation. Amazingly, he found his gaze drawn toward Chogan. He had brought the reeds, after all. He knew their properties. It would be up to the tawny Citali boy, then, to save Kenzoku. To save them all.

I think I've held this up long enough. :) I think Kenzie's with the group..?
Wolves gathered quickly. In times like these, even the slightest whisper of a cure traveled like the plague itself – quickly. The more pairs of expectant eyes he met, the straighter he felt he had to stand, and by the time Indris had arrived on the scene he had grown several inches in height. It was time to announce his findings to those who hadn't yet guessed the purpose of the reeds by his feet. He met Vrash's eye, then his foster father, finally settling on the silvery alpha that had preempted him and was already offering her thanks. He drew breath, and began to explain to those who hadn't. ”I c-” But Kenzoku's agonized wince cut him off, drawing his eyes to the pitifully frail creature by Radar's side. She looked so sick, so feeble - closer to the end of her life than its beginning.
Chogan left the feeble beginning of his speech where it lay, snatched a reed from the pile and scuttled towards Kenzoku, lowering his head to meet her hazy eyes. ”Cure, K'zoku,” he whispered through the mouthful of lacerating greenery he was chewing for her. ”I give you cure now – y'gotta chew it, 'kay? Here,” he maneuvered the chewed pulp to the front of his mouth, using it to nudge her quivering lip. ”Take. Chew, gonna feel better. Sleepy and nice.” His eyes were bright and glossy with tears she herself hadn't the energy to shed. What if it was too late?
