Having learned to appreciated the understated beauty and cosmetic benefits of mud baths, Chogan had since the leaves began to feel uneasy on their branches awaited every storm with much enthusiasm and eagerness. When they came, and it was often, he allowed himself not a moment's peace until every king-sized puddle of mud had been romped around in and its contents transferred to his coat. On reflection, this hadn't been his best idea ever, but after defeating the epidemic he had assumed he possessed at least some super-human ability to stave off whatever illness came knocking. He'd never considered – or even heard of – the common cold. It'd been nearly a month since it struck him down, and today was the first day he felt strong enough to wander far from the den, driven by an aching hunger.
He didn't travel far – just across the border to Whisper Forest, moving at a stealthy trot through fallen leaves and rows of trees just about to begin their season-long undressing. His frame was lean from lack of food and exercise, but the growth of a thick, paler version of his summer coat disguised the fact. If he was tired, his eyes did not show it. They were bright, searching the forest gloom for any sign of movement ash Chogan slunk through the undergrowth. A long time passed without so much a whispered sign of prey tickling his senses. He did, however, find something else. A tunnel – big enough even for a full-grown male, and certainly able to accommodate the bulk of a whelp who hadn't yet completed his first year. ”....”
Without thinking about what he might be getting himself into, Chogan swept the spare shrubbery which concealed the entrance to one side and took his first tentative steps into Hó’nehe territory.

Border patrol. It was one of the things Sakari had believed to be the least of her worries, but instead, it was turning out to be one of the biggest concerns to be considered. Never had she seen so many come in and out like so, and though a few of them had been scared off and forewarned, the female had another worry etched deep in her mind. Those who intruded had only been a small handful of the wolves in the pack. Should they return to their leaders and report back of the small band of tribal members in such close vicinity, what would they do? Would they gather up their guardians and best fighters to send this way in an all-out war, a battle for the survival of the fittest? They had no time to waste on such trivial matters; what was most important was the location of the Me’ko, but it seemed that such a dire task was not to be the main focus at the time.
A light sound up ahead caught her attention, ears perked alertly as she raised herself up on all fours, slipping behind the cover of a tree as quickly as she could. She did not fear whoever crossed the pathway, but simply to assess the stranger as well as to plan ahead on what ought to be done next. But it seemed quite unnecessary as the sight of a youngster appeared, a child in the middle stages of puppyhood and adulthood. While it was understandable that a pup’s young mind was filled with curious thoughts of adventure and exploration, Sakari knew that it was best to teach a youngster early on the right and wrong of certain things. This, for instance, would be a lesson better taught now than later.
”This is a wonderful place, isn’t it?” She moved to walk beside him, though keep a few paces between the two to allow for personal space as well as to keep her eye on the child if the boy had any smart ideas.

It was another day just as the one before it, and Cochise was becoming more and more aware of the possible threat that could have been erupting with all of those wolves who kept popping out of nowhere and roaming about on the grounds. She had been cross with a couple that she had found, a little more leinent towards those that had gotten lost, but she didn’t like the fact that they seemed so dumbfounded that the Hó’nehe existed. It was nearly blasphemy as far as she was concerned, although in retrospect she didn’t know that there were really any packs on the other side of their slice of paradise.
It had been spoken about, but she had never sought them out, not like her siblings and at one point her parents. Ultimately that hadn’t been a pleasant experience, or so that they had told her. But that had been a while before she had been born, so perhaps things had ultimately changed for the good out there. Cochise didn’t have a clue really, and to her it really didn’t matter much because it seemed like wolves wanted to visit them and stomp all over their grounds.
In the distance of her stroll, Cochise’s amber eyes spied out Sakari from a distance, walking alongside some fellow who she didn’t know. Part of her wanted to sigh and roll her eyes childishly, but another part of her decided that because the fellow was small, then he probably didn’t know any better. Seeing nor sensing any threat from the matter, the medic approached the Tsehata’a with a tail wag and a smile, her eyes going between Sakari and the puppy. “Who’s this?” she asked, lower her head almost to be nose to nose with the Mexican grey.

He hadn't gone far when a chirpy female turned up at his side, and at first he thought little of it – this wasn't the first time his company had been sought by a random passerby, and the amicable Strawberry was only too happy to welcome her. ”Oh, er – yes,” he replied, but when he reached his muzzle forward in greeting, he found she was too far away to touch. In the far distance, alarm bells began to sound – he'd always hated instinct for its ambiguity, but also knew it was best to heed the warning. He stopped in his tracks, and twisted one ear back. ”Hey, eh, do you....?”
A new arrival cut him off, and she certainly didn't have a problem with personal space. Before Chogan had a chance to react, he felt the heat of breath and a searching gaze mere inches from the tip of his nose. Pure luck kept him from falling back on his ass. ”Who...?” he spluttered – but why? There were four packs in the valley, 80% of whom he had yet to meet, so what made these two special? And exactly what was this place? In the background, he could see something of an alternative universe spread out before him, but almost immediately returned his focus to Cochise and Sakari. Wide, fearful eyes skipped between the two. ”I'm...I'm Chogan,” he said, brimming with questions but unsure what needed asking. ”Who are...do you live here?”

Sometimes, Sakari felt utterly alone – in action, in thought, in everything. Was she wrong in being wary of these strangers? Should she visibly be courteous to them like some of the tribe members had done? Was their trespassing not such a big deal afterall? A part of her wanted to put up a barrier, show them that the Hó'nehe meant business and did not want intruders uninvited, and the only way she knew how to do that was to show the tougher side of the tribe. Another part wanted to welcome them in moderation so as to easily find more information from the residents that may give clues or hints to the whereabouts of the rightful heir. Two such opposite sides conflicting with one another within one self; no wonder she had her moments.
With Cochise’s approach and the immediate closeness her aunt had displayed with this youngster, Sakari was reminded of her contradicting viewpoints, unsure of which one to take this time. Should she be harsh and tell the youngster to stay clear of these claimed grounds unless invited, or should she show a bit of clemency for this child and give him a second chance?
The pup’s attempt at a nose touch had not gone unnoticed, and that small action coupled with his look of confusion made the decision for her. Perhaps she ought to give this tyke some good faith; not all innocence was lost and it wouldn’t hurt to retain some of that naivety just a bit longer. Plus, Cochise seemed to be interested in this young fellow and she was a bit intrigued herself.
A bit of stuttering came from his lips as he looked back and forth between the two females. She was thoroughly impressed with his speediness in identifying himself before anything else, an action that further bumped him up on Sakari’s good side. Many others had been slow to provide identification, some even outright refusing to reveal themselves. But this Chogan had sense and the Tsehata’a found herself nodding in approval. ”What are you doing here, young blackbird?” She called him by the Indian meaning, finding it interesting that there was another in the valley not of the tribe with such a calling.

Sorry about the wait. D:
Oh, this was interesting! Cochise’s ears perked right up when he said that his name was Chogan. It was kind of strange to hear that name considering that out of all of the other wolves that Cochise had the unfortunate chance of meeting, this one had a name that they could actually understand the meaning of. She eyed the Mexican grey for a few moments more, before letting her gaze slip to Sakari and she moved out of the way to flop down in the grass hesitantly. This, well this just amused her. All of those wolves and finally, one with a name that basically made some bloody sense.
“And where are you from, little blackbird?” she asked, almost tempted to ask him where his parents were, but she refrained from it. That may have sounded a little too threatening perhaps, or maybe he’d get the idea that they were going to haul him back to them and let them paddle his arse for whatever he did wrong. The last thing that she wanted after this new revelation was to scare him off. Even though she had to admit that she was irked by the fact that he was wandering around loose on their grounds.
But then again… who hadn’t been?

Blackbird? Chogan frowned, and was about to let Sakari and Cochise know that they were either stupid or confused when Styx's balmy voice rose into his head. Ravn. Chogan's lips formed a silent 'oh', but instantly his facial features contorted into a look of confusion. How did these two utter strangers to the valley know what it meant? Perhaps it would be best if he answered their questions before posing any of his own. He answered Cochise first.
”Er, Strawberry Fields?” he tried, wondering if they'd left their hide-out since arriving here, whenever that had been. ”It's not far. Big field, smells nice.” Deep breath. ”I kinda just..found the tunnel and went in. But, uh...” And a step back. ”If you live here, I'll go, obviously... I didn't meant to trespass at all. I just didn't know anyone lived here.” Please, please don't take me to your leader.

It appeared that the child had been frightened as more words came stuttering out of his mouth, followed by the obvious attempt at an apology, hoping that the two would understand his mistake and allow him to head back home. He had just gotten here and gotten on her good side and already he wished to go? She was now not only interested in him as he appeared to have some good sense when other adults did not even harbor such a thing, but she was also intrigued with the possibility that he might have had some sort of connection to their Indian allies. Chogan was a name that could be easily translated into the language of their ancestors, and Sakari was definitely curious to the possibility that this young one might have been raised with their Cheyenne friends.
Nodding her head to the apology, she did not deny that he had done wrong and trespassed without invitation, but she would not show anger in such a mistake, seeing how he was indeed still a child and perhaps did not know the ways of the packs yet. Not to mention, the wolves occupying the valley seemed to be dimwits; how could a child know the right way when all others were doing wrong? But enough of that; she didn’t want Chogan to dwell on the thought, only simply to understand that it was wrong and not to do the same thing again. But she was sure he knew that already. ”Mistakes and misunderstandings are forgivable the first time around.” It was enough to let him know that he was pardoned.

I'm going to pull Cochise out of this thread here.
Strawberry Fields, another pack? Another name Cochise put in her head as she rose to her feet. Seeing that it was only just a puppy, she didn't think that she was bound to be needed there. It was clear to her that the boy was nervous enough with both of them there, and seeing that she was probably the more callous of the two, she made her way to Sakari and then turned away, dark-haired tail flicking passively. I think since it's just the young blackbird I'll be on my way, she said to her niece, figuring that Sakari more or less felt the same that she did about the doubled presence of those scary ghosts. From there she went on, tossing a kind-worded goodbye over her shoulder: Naase, blackbird!
Chances were, she'd never see him again.

Wrapping up. Peculiar creatures, the newly dubbed Blackbird thought to himself, accepting Sakari's forgiveness and Cochise's farewell with a single nod of his head. As far as he knew, things had gone smoothly – he had acquainted himself without losing any limbs or incurring any outrageous fines for trespassing. All in all, not a bad day. ”I-” he started, watching Cochise's retreating backside until it turned a corner and disappeared out of sight. It was high time he did the same. ”I should go, too. It's...late! You probably want dinner. Or something. I, uh...nice to meet you!” Leaving the elder with that and a flimsy bow, he turned on a five pence coin and darted back into the dark, musty passage that bled smells of the outside world into the tribe's hidden sanctuary. |
