I'm unsure how good this is, since my previous attempt got chewed up by a loco web broswer, and my reconstructions never seem to be as good as the original. At any rate, I'm glad to be playing Danflower again.

About one week ago, Danflower had returned to Nova Mountain from an absence (forced by a hereditary illness) spanning several months. Unfortunately for him, he had returned to find that both Kratina (previously his prized pupil) and Azarieth (with whom he had begun to develop a very deep relationship) no longer resided on the mountain.

In fact, everyone he had previously met on the mountain had left. (This was not very surprising, however, considering a) the fact that between his position as Guardian and the first symptoms of his illness surfacing, he had only met a few handful of them, and b) the rapid turnover rate of the wolves residing in any one of the packs in the valley. At any rate, Dan had never really gotten to know any of them as more than passing aquantinces).

Actually, all of them had left...except one: Sinistra, the pack Alpha.

Danflower and the aforementioned embodiment of eccentricity had always had a...strange relationship (then again, everything connected with the aloof leader seemed to be strange, odd, or just plain abnormal). Digression aside, however, Dan--if he had ever really thought about it--would never have exactly considered the onyx male a "friend," per se, but he definately viewed him as more than just his chief superior. (However, as touched upon previously, Dan never really gave it much thought, since even the most abstract of descriptions and terms had ever left him satisfied the couple of times he had thought about it).

At any rate, Danflower definately wanted to meet up with Sin in the next couple of days.

What were the odds that--mere minutes after that determination--he would meet up with Sin at one of the mountain's springs? Sometimes, it really seemed as if some invisible force or forces moved the inhabitants of the valley around like pieces on a giant chess board.

There was one place on Nova Mountain where, ironically in light of its beauty and serenity, few journeyed—and that was to one of the small, bubbling springs well hidden in a lush alpine forest mid-way to the summit. Perhaps they simply did not know of its existence, the vast majority of natives and trespassers; Sinistra was lucky enough to have spent many days there as a pup and often sought refuge there when the world outside became too overbearing. This afternoon was such a case. Earlier in the day, the black Alpha had met with Allure and shortly thereafter Bronx, all to discuss a continuing enmity between Nova Mountain and its northward neighbor.

Silver Creek was at it again… now they had, apparently, taken to permitting rampant monsters into their ranks. A red-eyed black wolf had viciously attacked Allure on the shores of White Rose Lake; his home, unsurprisingly, was amongst the putrid swamps of Sphinx’s domain. Bronx had whole-heartedly agreed to a spate of revenge before taking off to check on his sister, while Sinistra now found himself listening to the gurgling water grow closer with each step he took. There was little being taken in of the outside world spare those sounds—he was deep in thought, contemplating warfare and threats thereof, both of which were imminent (though perhaps in the opposite order).

When he reached the clearing site home to the spring, the Novan leader was surprised to find another had taken to thinking here: and even more surprised to discover who it was. Coming to a pause at the edge of the treeline, Sinistra considered this familiar face for a moment of uncertainty as to whether he was hallucinating—but then the word had been that the Mountain’s first Guardian had returned, hadn’t it? Ah, the wolf offered in greeting, tilting his head in a mutually respectful nod, Dannyboy. The nickname simply wouldn’t quit. Good to see you.

’Cause we need all the rabid anti-Silver Creek warriors we can find…

I guess this saves me from having to track him down.

As one would expect from a pack Alpha, Sinistra was--so long as his patterns were roughly the same as they were several months ago--rather difficult to simply "run into" for a conversation. After all, Alphas were constantly being presented with one matter of business or another, and it wasn't uncommon for them to seek a bit of solitude when they managed to catch a break. The best way to arrange a meeting was via howling, but that was reserved for (what else?) more business.

As the Alpha approached, Danflower bent down in submission. Perhaps he was presuming too far on their friendship (or whatever word would really describe it best), but he didn't go so far as would probably be acceptable for the lowest of the pack when meeting the highest of the pack. As it was, his submission was obvious enough; it just wasn't the all-out display their differences in rank would normally dictate. (Dan wasn't trying to "skate the edge," as it were; merely trying to faciliate conversation).

Danflower grimaced slightly at the familiar "Dannyboy." Had it had come from the lips of any other wolf except for Sin, he would've considered it patronizing and--Alpha or not--would've vocalized such thoughts quite...insistently. He still didn't care much for the nickname, but it didn't quite carry the connotations it certainly would have if spoked by any other wolf.

"Likewise, and it's good to be back. How have you been faring of late?"

Miserably.

The swiftness of his vocalization alone would have left no doubt of his utter despair; yet the tone of his voice—cheery, matter-of-fact—seemed to contradict what was actually said. It was true, though, lately he had been fairly quite miserably. There was the issue between Allure and Calliope, which had promptly resumed the moment he and his mate had returned to Nova. There was dealing with the failure, after so much work, of finding absolutely nothing useful cure-wise during the summer sickness when a mere youth had saved them all. And now there was the bitter dis-ease once again arisen between the Mountain pack and their northward neighbors. It was enough to drive anyone mad.

But, Sinistra continued with a shrug to state that Danflower should pay this unfortunate news no mind, my own problems.

His next inclination was to launch into sharing news about the latest, greatest run-ins with the Creek—but before speaking any further, the black wolf did what he had come here to do: sat down near the edge of the babbling, sparkling waters with a weighted sigh. You have good timing, the Alpha finally spoke once more. We need more guardians and fighters, he continued, explaining vaguely. Silver Creek’s attacked one of our members. And dramatically, he paused before adding:

So we’re going to repay the favor.

Phew! Because of the way I get my post into my table, I accidently edited this post into my last one. Fortunately, I was able to hit the back button a few times to take me to the correct version.

Danflower gave a quiet snort of amusement at Sinistra's complete contradiction of words and tone of voice. It was the same type of answering-without-answering and levity that anyone who spent very much time around the Alpha came to expect. (Of course, many were surprised by the quick turn of attitude he was capable of when they stepped out of line).

At Sin's words, Danflower cocked a wolfish brow. It was an interesting developement, to say the least. First, it let Dan know that--contrary to his hopes--the situation with the Creek hadn't smoothed over with time. Instead, it had decidedly worsened. Second, it gave a definate indication that there was something deeper to Silver Creek's antagonism of Nova Mountain than he had originally thought. Finally, it removed just about any hope of a diplomatic solution.

Of course, those points were merely Dan's initial impression, and the last one was open to revision after he garnered more information. Sin's statement had been rather vague, and it left room for a great deal of refinement. Oh? What happened exactly?

Most wolves—assuming they were keen—who were familiar with Sinistra knew that there was an easy way to gauge how well-respected they were in the ebony wolf’s eyes: ask a question. Subordinates and others quickly discovered that they would receive very little answer to the inquiries they made of the Alpha; he was not, as it were, a walking encyclopedia for them to crack open on command. Only those who had ascended the ladder of respect in Nova Mountain could expect no-nonsense answers to their questions. In short, had most any other lower-ranked wolf than Danflower made such a grasp for information, they would have been promptly rebuked.

But formality was not the flavor of the day here: the once-Guardian was well-aware of the hierarchical structure the pack followed, of this Sinistra was certain; there was no need to remind anyone present of their place on the peak. The same was true of Tobin, Siaqi, Poet, Bronx, Allure… Calliope, of course… perhaps even Jubilee, although of Mountain’s “upper crust,” Sin knew her least. It was rather select company.

Apparently, the leader began, noting with his choice of words that he had not seen the event itself—merely its damages. Allure, our Eta, was resting by White Rose Lake when a Creek wolf approached her. Despite the informal atmosphere of their gathering, Sinistra’s words were high reminiscent of an official communiqué… dead serious. He demanded to know “what she was doing,” and when she turned to avoid confrontation he attacked her. This was not word-for-word what Allure had told him, but once again choice of wording was important. The red-eyed black wolf had clearly been the antagonist. And Sinistra was going to make sure it sounded that way, so there would be no doubt in anyone’s mind this had been a grievous offense—and it had been. She fought in her own defense and managed to get away alive—luckily. It also assisted their position to make it sound as if MRE (Mister Red-Eyes) had been trying to kill her. There was really no proof that was his intention, but… well, it seemed a logical conclusion to draw.

It won’t go unpunished. No apologies this time.

Danflower listened carefully to Sinistra's account, carefully analyzing each word, each phrase, each intonation. Now, this of course wasn't the analyzation one might give to someone they suspected of untruthfulness; Danflower simply was attempting to extract all possible information without further questions. He wanted to understand the situation exactly, so that he might make the greatest possible use of it in relation to his service within the pack.

Primarily, Dan noted the first word: "apparently." This was quite an important qualifier; it meant that whatever account Sinistra was about to relate to him was not first-hand information. It also meant that he was making room for innaccuracy for that very reason, as he wasn't quite stating it as complete fact. On the other hand, considering that the one who was affected--and therefore the one who more than likely related the original account to Sin--was the pack's Eta, it was probable that she was rather reliable. Now, if it had been some low-ranking wolf with little no to no history within the pack, the possibility that they were lying for their own benefit would be much greater. However, no one gets to a position as high as Eta without showing a great deal of dependability.

Details aside, the fact that it was a single wolf that had done the attacking would make the matter considerably easier to resolve than if it really had been a large portion of the pack. That was, of course, if Sphinx cooperated with whatever punishment Sinistra had in mind for the offender.

When Sin stopped speaking, Dan had another question. "Do you know who it was?" Probably not, but Sin surely at least had a description.

No. The reply was prompt — not snappy, though, simply quick and tempered with a sense of regret. Sinistra had no idea who, exactly, had attacked Allure other than it had been a Silver Creek wolf: for all the obvious reasons, she hadn’t stopped to ask for his name. Although any normal creature of reasonable intelligence would take what information the Novan leader did have and figure out the actual identity of the attacker from there, it was already painfully evident that Sphinx was neither normal nor reasonably intelligent. This clearly would present a challenge in the meting-out-of-punishment department.

She claims he was black with red eyes, he continued with no implication that he found this absurd. It did seem strange a notion to consider — a black thing with red eyes — but Sinistra had no reason to disbelieve the Eta. Not to mention the fact that the Swamp, as Danflower was no doubt well aware from his time spent there, was liable to do strange things to a creature — those toxic chemicals in the air couldn’t be good for one’s complexion… Which I imagine eliminates very few, the Alpha said wryly, I envision the vast majority of them as looking like the devil himself.

He stopped short of mentioning how Mister Red Eyes’s appearance was going to be altered — it seemed, at the moment, out of place. But he had a feeling anyone who listened to his description of the event and what was going to happen next would understand exactly what he meant.

No. It was a predictable enough response, of course; unless the wolf was particularly boastful, there would have been no reason for him to give out his name. (Of course, based upon Sinistra's account, this particular wolf most likely wasn't altogether sound of mind, so that was entirely improbable). Additionally, there was also the chance that Sinistra had discovered the offender's exact identity since that time via a description, but this conversation would probably have included punishment as a past occurance--rather than a future one--if Sin had that much information already.

She claims he was black with red eyes. That, of course, was definately not a predictable response. Red eyes? Danflower had heard stories and rumors of such a thing being possible, and while most of it was simply superstition, he had heard a couple of first-hand accounts from his old pack's medic (who was positively ancient and had probably treated just about every single disease and disorder known to wolvenkind). Thus, he didn't entirely doubt the aforementioned claim. He knew one thing, however: if this wolf truly did have red eyes, it was a sure sign of insanity. (On a somewhat unrelated note, he did notice Sin's use of the word "claims." Apparently, he was leaving himself some room for doubt).

Slowly, Dan shook his head. "I only met Sphinx once, but I would always have attributed better judgment to her than this. Normally, I wouldn't think the Alpha should be blamed if one their subordinates does something idiotic--so long as the necessary steps are taken to correct the problem afterwards--but I'm not so sure in this case. At the very least, allowing a wolf into the pack with such an obvious mark of insanity is highly...unintelligent." He paused for a moment. "On the upside, though, such a distinctive characteristic will certainly make the process of identifying the offender considerably easier."

Sinistra had also only met Sphinx once — he and Allure had gone to the Creek for the sole purpose of meeting her after they had spent the evening in Wild Fire Forest, sharing a kill (or, well, neither of them had actually killed it, but… it was nonetheless dead…). Now that seemed like an eternity ago, a time before all of the real tension settled in both between his pack and the other, and between Allure and his now-mate. A different life time, indeed.

One at times he wondered what it would have been like to return to and try again, if he didn’t outright wish to do so. Alas, this was what things were, what he and Danflower were presently discussing, and there was no turning back or running away any longer. The Novan leader strove to find comfort in the reminder that he had confronted rather successfully the latter of the two issues, between Allure and Calliope, and that he could do it again now with this much bigger, more far-reaching, more dangerous situation… even though, admittedly, the Alpha had no idea how, just the confidence that he would be able to figure it out when the time came.

Hopefully.

Danflower seemed to express a sentiment along that vein when he noted how easy it would be to track down Mister Red Eyes considering the un-named suspect’s odd appearance. Why was it always the foolish looking ones who acted the fools? Didn’t they know any better, didn’t they realize that their uniqueness was also their ticket to an utter lack of anonymity? Indeed, Sin agreed, shuffling his paws nervously. Unless they’ve all turned into monsters — a theory I have yet to discount.

Sorry the wait; I haven't been feeling too great lately. ;(
With all of his questions concerning the currently-unknown violent attacker answered, Danflower fell silent for a few moments. So far, the conversation had consisted entirely of Dan asking questions and Sinistra answering them, and so this action (or lack thereof) created a short lull. Sinistra made no move to "fill in the gap," as it were, so Danflower took the time to arrange his thoughts before his next question(s).

Perhaps it was somewhat presumptuous of him, asking all these questions. After all, past relationships aside, their ranks at the current moment were as absolutely far apart as they could possibly be. Then again, Sinistra had so far not displayed any negativity towards him, and--despite the Alpha's usual, flamboyent attitude--he was certainly quite capable of making any displeasure with one's actions extremely plain. (So far as Dan could recall, almost the entire pack had found this out the hard way during the first official pack meeting). At any rate, Dan's only purpose in the numerous questions was to be able to utilize the information in his service of the pack.

Ignorance may be bliss, but knowledge is power. Bliss may serve the individual, but only power can serve the collective.

Before the silence was allowed to stretch to far, Danflower quickly formulated his next question. "Has anything else negative occured with the Creek while I was away?" After all, the attack could very well have been an isolated incidence of singular idiocy, rather than of collective ill-will.

I understand a wolf name Kimoto has taken a disliking to Bronx, Sinistra replied promptly but thoughtfully, recollecting in brief what the Præfectus had informed him during their meeting to discuss Allure’s attack. Kimoto, incidentally, had been one to fall ill during the summer plague — although to be honest, the Alpha was entirely uncertain how one could tell with Silver Creek members whether they were ill or sincerely that retarded… incidentally, Sinistra had run into the buffoon in Silent Moon Plateau whilst searching for a cure, and he doubted that if Kimoto could remember their meeting that Sphinx’s play toy cared much for him, either.

And I’ve never had much luck with him myself, the black wolf admitted with a shrug and a piteous shake of his head before adding, in explanation, Hopelessly dense. (A perfect match for Sphinx, though…) That was all that came to mind for major issues with Silver Creek, although he did know they were still trespassing: a young Creek puppy had been around when Siaqi and he had been searching for Chena, and Sinistra was certain that no one had invited her on to Nova Mountain lands. Their childrens’ lack of manners was the best demonstration of how they still lacked their own.

I imagine we’ll hear more at the meeting, Sinistra said, now standing up and stretching, taking a brief moment to shake loose bits of leaf matter and dirt from his coat. There wasn’t much left to be retold to Danflower now, and the once-Guardian was surely running out of questions to ask. Besides, a lot of information he sought would be told at the meeting, and the Alpha wasn’t keen on repeating himself too many times. But if not, as an afterthought he added, mid-step in the direction of departing, There will be plenty more to come, I’m sure.

Danflower was satisfied that he had been brought up to par with the current situation. Ordinarily, he probably would've been somewhat hesitant to ask such a consistant string of questions of the Alpha (especially considering the drastic differences in their rank), in order to prevent any possible offense. However, as he had been personally involved with the Silver Creek-Nova Mountain conflict on more than one occassion, he felt it would be imprudent not to have a proper understanding of how the situation had evolved.

Fortunately, though, it appeared as if the attack on Allure had been the only major event during his absence. On the other hand, it was possible (probable, even) that the trespassing and other smaller offenses had continued, and Sinistra simply hadn't felt compelled to reiterate them. At any rate, Dan determined to keep an eye out for those looking to stir up trouble.

Sinistra then stood up and prepared for departure, bringing the meeting to a close. His final words seemed to indicate he was expecting further trouble, if it hadn't surfaced already (thus giving backing to Dan's earlier speculation). Out of respect to the Alpha, Dan also rose, giving a respectful bow to his leader. "Farewell, then. Thank you for your time." The two then parted ways, each to his own particular business.
